The Failed 'New Traditions' of Dr. Turner

Postby couch 'em » Fri Oct 02, 2009 8:11 am

Let's see, what traditions have died, and laughable "new tradtions" attempted to start:

New costumed mascot - Mustang Maniac/Noid
New fight song - Might Mustangs Thunder
Pigskin Revue - 70+ year tradition ended this year
New Logo - remember the arena ball jumping horse logo the last year of Copeland?
[deleted] with a bell in the endzone
Looping pony ears around your head after Varsity, stolen from Texas Tech
Of course, must include the new gelding mascot, Oxymoron.

Anyone care to add?

Anyone know what he killed at this last place of employment?

I think the Boulevard was a pretty great idea...wasn't that taken from Ole Miss...his former school?

I'd rather try some changes even if they fail...the old traditions haven't helped us much in the way of winning games in the past 20 years. Just my $.02

We could have the greatest traditions on the planet and it still wouldn't have a damn thing to do with winning. Get real.

When it comes to spirit groups (cheerleaders, dance girls) we are VERY high school. It's embarrassing. The only two positive things we've got going for us: 1) Mustang Band 2) Peruna. Can anyone name another single thing?

Why was Pigskin Revue cancelled? Turner shouldn't have anything to do with that. It used to go through Student Senate Appropriations budget (funded through student fees) and then Rolling Appropriations for extras. Generally speaking, the administration stayed out of "student affairs" unless they notified Senate of fewer student fees (they reserve the right to siphon money when necessary). If that happened, it's possible that Appropriations had to cut programs to meet allocated budget. When I was in school, we had to cut Sing-Song (didn't go over well in Greek quarters) in order to accomodate the loss of student fees to collective efforts to keep football in Division 1A. Everything was about budgets and meeting them.

So what the hell happened?

Pigskin Revue >>>>>>> Sing Song.

By a mile. The Greeks don't take Sing Song seriously, and it shows. Immensely

Here's one - looping pony ears around your head at the end of Varsity. That idea came directly from Texas Tech. List updated.

I am as depressed about the demotion of Peruna as anyone, but at the end of the day, I'd settle for the noid riding Peruna as a new tradition if if meant winning some games (also as a new tradition).
I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.

No argument here. Still doesn't tell me why Turner is in the middle of Pigskin Revue...he should have absolutely nothing to do with it.

And for the record, Turner's achievements at SMU really come down to a single statement:
Dr. Turner raised money for SMU...lots of it.

His athletic hires have been...um...either dubious or the jury is still out on.
And no, I do not think he has been particularly partisan in favor of Div-1A football and/or basketball because he did not take on the Faculty Senate about it until recently, if he has even done so now.

It is what it is. He's done some things real well...mostly fundraising. And the rest...well...I hardly consider him Dr. Tate.

"Winning" not only creates traditions but extends & builds existing traditions. No doubt our administration has done a wonderful job of all this!!! (sarcasm)

Yes - the blame squarely is on Turner & the administration.

As for a "money raiser", Turner is very good at that. No doubt. Quite frankly, most college presidents today are nothing more than $$$ raisers - period!
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

I've been told that the present band director, Don Hopkins, decided that Pigskin Revue cost the band too much to do, in terms of renting out McFarlin, etc.
The donkey's name is Kiki.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?

Then Hopkins should have to answer to some criticism as well.
