NO LOVE FOR #88

Postby Sunshine » Sun Oct 04, 2009 2:25 pm

I noticed that in four games this year one kid, #88 is blocking exclusively this year with only one pass thrown his way. Last year this kid started three games, played in four and caught every pass that was catchable and thrown his way. Yet this year he is asked to block for his teammates and does so admirably and unselfishly. He does not chirp or demand the ball to be thrown his way like some wide receivers are known to be. SMU that's what a team player looks like.

I may not know much about football. However, I do know that a good quarterback and coach can help his team win by using all options just like other great football programs.

He had a big game last year aginst UTEP and really came on after ES and AR got suspended, why were we playing the true freshman wideout from Southlake (not saying he is bad) against TCU ? I thought we had like 10 receivers....Johnson hurt, I guess Beasley hurt, didnt see Loftin very much, Aldrick has been a shadow of himself compared to last year, are we suddenly thin at WR ?

Yeah I noticed that as well. I was like why do we have a walk-on true freshman receiver in when we have 10 other good receivers, yet we cant try the backup QB just once!

Bradley Haynes. He did play well last year, so not sure why he hasn't gotten the ball. Also, he lettered in track in high school, so he's got some speed.

The reason why he has not gotton the ball is because he seems to be running alot routes that take him away from the great BLM eyes. Even though I see Haynes, Robinson and sometimes Wilkerson wide open BLM throws it to the first option no matter how covered that WR is the first option is getting the ball. It seems as if Haynes is still new to the rotation. Jones may finally trust him enough to put him out there. That said there probably is not alot plays in the playbook that has him as a first option right now. That may change as the season goes on, but as of right now he is out there as a second option and BLM doesn't through the balls to second options.

For some reason, JJ seems to want to play the smaller -type receivers in this offense...similar to the old John Jenkins run and shoot at Houston back in the old days. This type small, quick receiver can cause matchup problems for bigger and slower safeties and linebackers but there is a durability question with the physical toll of the hits they are taking. There is a reason why the big receivers 6 foot and up and around 190 and up are becoming more prevalent. you may give up some speed or quickness but they may be able to hold up better and longer. The 4.3 and 4.4 small receivers are being used more and more as specialists instead of every down players. Why they don't take advantage of the talents of Haynes and his size or a mystery. Maybe because the receivers coach is on the small side also? Davonne Bess's times at the combines were in the 4.7s but he was 5'10" 190-200lbs and had such great, soft hands and could separate from the db's. The coaches are the experts so I guess they must know more than us fans of the game.

Smurfs inside-Big guys outside. The problem though is that there are only a handful of tall receivers that have the speed necessary to excell. Almost all Run and Shoot Inside Receivers are the 5-9 to 5-11 guys who can turn on a dime.

We had at least 3 false starts against TCU, and an illegal snap, so there seems to be a lot to go around.
