No matter what the number is, its pretty clear that there is much more downside from this PR debacle than upside. I honestly don't think the new horses will directly or indirecly get SMU even one more new fan. On the contrary though, with continued inepitude and bad handling, SMU stands to actually lose support ($ and fans) over this. I'd estimate 10 to 1. For every one new fan (generous, but maybe one little DISD kid who likes big horseys will like us now) or dollar that may come from the Pickens for this, SMU will lose 10. Not good business or PR.

Let me just ask you straight up--if SMU decides to use these new horses in some capacity at football games, are you going to be one of the 10 fans it loses per your prediction?

I'll answer straight up... If the new horses replace Peruna or are put on equal standing with him, I'll boycott. I boycotted after the baseball strike and haven't paid for a MLB game since. I haven't bought a Cowboys ticket since we hired T.O. either (been to several games, but not on my nickel). As competitive as the sports market is here in Dallas, I think it's a HUGE risk to [deleted] off your fan base because there are so many other entertainment choices. NOBODY should know that better than SMU!! And if they haven't figured it out, well, shame on them.

Well then I guess it's safe to say that you are a huge Peruna supporter and not much of a supporter of SMU athletics at all. More power to you, but don't count yourself among the 1500.

As for being a fan, i can only speak for myself, and I think its obvious that I have lost alot of patience over the past few years. The straws on the camels back start to add up. I missed the game last week because I chose to go out town to see some friends. In years past, I probably would have planned around an SMU home game, not so much lately. Thats just honest, not venemous.

I'm really glad to hear you say this. I consider myself a loyal fan. I've been to just about every home football game since 1985. This is the first time this decade I haven't bought season tickets (which is sort of incongruous considering this is a year I -- and most people -- should be excited about).

But I've been shoveled enough crap over the years that my enthusiasm has waned a bit, and there were enough conflicts on the schedule (like your visiting of out-of-town friends) that this year I simply didn't Pony Up.

What does that have to do with anything? I'm pretty sure the Mustang Club would rather not have you than have you advocating boycott.

And thanks for calling me punk, it makes me feel younger.

Not to belabor the obvious, but you said I was "not much of a supporter of SMU athletics at all."

Sorry, but I call B.S. I'm certainly not in Gerald Ford's or Carl Sewell's class, but I will stand up for myself and say that my contribution to SMU athletics is quite a bit more than 'not much'. In fact, Superior Wood Care and my company are the largest PonyFans sponsors. So I could make the point that your enjoyment of this site is due, in part, to my support of SMU athletics.

This ill advised decision to add the new horses was evidently made because or Mr. Pickens' wallet. I'm sure the decision can be reversed if SMU realizes that they stand to loose and equivalent amount of cash.

Rather than a lack of support, I like to think of my protest as 'tough love'.

I appreciate the ponyfans.com support of Superior Wood Care and your company (if they are one and the same and you own SWC I did not get it--but I like the initials). I just don't think somebody who has been through all we have and would now advocate boycott of SMU football over what horse appears on the sidelines is, as I said, much of an SMU athletic supporter (yes I said it) at all, financial support notwithstanding. I don't begrudge your wanting to boycott, I just don't get you using "boycott" in one post and "loyal fan" in the next.

And since you brought it up, would you go into the next Mustang Club meeting and announce your intention to boycott the Mustangs if they do what you fear? What kind of reaction do you think you'd get?

Do whatever you want. I'll be there on Saturdays when I can.

And please refer to me as punk for the forementioned reason.

My company is RejeX.com We manufacture and distribute cutting edge automotive and marine products. RejeX is a polymer coating that you can use instead of wax. Ultra-high gloss, long life, nothing sticks to it. Stupid name, but it does "reject" bug splats, bird poop, brake dust, etc.

Superior Wood Care is owned by the great Tom Huemiller. Tom is a former Mustang OL and was on the '89 recently honored by coach Gregg at halftime for being the class that brought SMU back from the death penalty.

Like the other poster said (Hoop Fan I think), it's not this one incident -- it's more like the last straw. The new horses aren't an isolated incident. They are merely the latest in a long series of choices that demonstrate disloyalty to the people, fans and traditions that helped build a great university. I am the seventh person (actually, I'm the 6th, my wife's the 7th) in my immediate family to graduate from SMU, so I am somewhat familiar with the concepts of tradition and loyalty.

Candidly, I'm not ballsy enough to stand up in a meeting. But I will tell June and I certainly won't refrain from letting other Mustang Club members know how I feel about the horses.

Man, if I was PPride or Webmaster, it is threads like this that would tempt me to just delete the site altogether and be done with it. It's not like they're getting paid to do this. Relax folks

Punk. 8)
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
