I buns me that the non athletic part of the university refers to athletic scholarship as 'non merit' scholarships. The reason is that athletic scholarships are earned just the merit isn't based on GPA or SAt results. If a kid walks on and earns a scholarship, regardless of the ability to pay, then he should receive the scholarship. The award of the scholarship is a recognition of athletic merit. That is an honor just like receiving an academic scholarship.
And we have had plenty of athletes that have had full rides from the beginning and never contribute. At least with the walk-on, you have a chance to evaluate their athletic abilities at the college level and not the HS level.
JJ may have a different philosophy and it is his program to run. I just feel that if the kid earns it, regardless of the ability for his family to pay, he should receive it.
