this is funny. JJ was labeled a homophobic.

He incorporated black as part of the team's colors.

And in 2000, he encouraged athletic director Hugh Yoshida to change the team nickname from Rainbow Warriors to Warriors.

Critics insist the move was homophobic-based, because the rainbow is the symbol of gay pride. Jones denied that, saying the decision came down to simple marketing.

"If you're not doing good, you have to rebrand," Jones said. "That's what we did. We wanted to change the name, the colors ... because we weren't selling any logos. When we changed the logo, we did it the right way. Hugh, all of us, we were on the same page

I would support keeping Peruna over keeping JJ no matter what his record. Apprantely the SMU administration has not done their homework and are bullied by JJ over the outcry from Alumni. Peruna is not the problem. It's JJ's excuse.

Interesting. We seem to have more of a reaction over the mascot than being 2-0 in conference for the first time in over 20 years.

2-0 in years applies to this year. Peruna applies to our entire history. Peruna is far more important than 2 wins in one year.

No it is not. We were a winning team once upon a time. Even though we paid players to do so. Now we are winning a not paying players. This is clearly more important than a horse and could change the whole direction of the school's athletic program.

If winning is more important, then why did SMU decide that it had to introduce these new horses during the middle of football season? Seems to me that the University thought changing the mascot was more important than winning.

Actually, other than NCAA-forced changes involving Native American images, please identify these "mascot changes" that routinely come and go?

The complaining will stop when this silliness has ended with Peruna's place intact.

You are wrong. Peruna represents SMU, and is more important than winning, period. Also, we are 3-2, 2-0 in conference first time since 1986 with a PONY as our mascot. According to JJ, that should not be possible.

Someone said that they would rather get ride of J than add the horses. That is ridiculous. Some traditions we had needed to change.

We weren't paying players in 1935 when we won the National Championship with Peruna leading the Mustangs. We weren't paying players in the 1940's when Doak Walker came to SMU and led the Mustangs to a great era on the gridiron. We weren't paying players in the mid 60's when Jerry LeVias suited up and led us to a Cotton Bowl. Yeah, during the 1970's and 1980's we were paying players (like TCU, A&M among others). We got a well deserved punishment for that.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

AZ, are you saying that a 3-2 record including a win over SFA should have us so giddy that we don't care about anything else? Maybe you are new here as it appears, and yes the past 15 years have been lean, but we were 6-6 and within an eyelash of a bowl three years ago. Lets see if we get in position to better that by the end of this year. Too bad we arent 4-1, that might feel like a different stratosphere. But even if we were, Peruna is non negotiable. especially for a pair of geldings that will have riders and "kneel down" like not naughty boys when they arent being ridden.

GSP, you mentioned Jerry LeVIas broke the color barrier. It was a tradition that Afican American athletes were not allowed at SMU or the SWC. We broke that tradition and Jerry LeVias was not received to well by some on the SMU campus either when that happened.

Glad to know that you are equating ending the tradition of white-only players at SMU for the purpose of human dignity with replacing our mascot with a larger one for the purpose of marketing.
