1 - So you're saying you'd rather have Cavan or Bennett back? Don't answer, because there is only one correct answer. 2 - Coach Jones and his staff had SMU gear on. Some of them also had on a lei in honor of their friends, and they managed to nearly coach the Ponies to a win over a damn-good team. Go back in your cave.

As I said before, JJ can dress like Liberace for all I care, as long as our team keeps improving, and he leaves our mascot alone

We hosted Coach's friends at our tailgate and they brought leis for all of the women and I wore mine proudly the entire game. They also brought them for the coaches. I thought it was a nice gesture. I could get used to having beautiful flowers and gracious guests at every game.

gostangs wrote:Some will say this is reading too much into a simple string of flowers - but I also think that game day attire is something the players indirectly pick up on. It does not say "I am committed to this place and to you come hell or high water" - it sort of says - "I would still rather be in hawaii but they are paying me a bunch of dough so I will stick it out for three more yrs and then pick a favored asst coach to take over". Texans are proud. We want you to like being here - or at least be smart enough to pretend.
If he has to do the (already done) Johnny Cash thing - he can at least get a black shirt with SMU on it. The checks proabably have SMU on them afterall.
I suggest one of you men grow some stones, show up at the lunch Monday and ask him why he doesn’t wear the traditional polo coach wear at the games. I would really like to hear his response. If I know June, it would be something like I’m comfortable in that, next question.

I have to disagree with this. The only knock I have on JJ is his repeated reliance on the delayed handoff. Once the other team figures that play out and stuffs it a few times, you move on. Oh, and the big horse thing. Otherwise, JJ & Co. are doing a fine job. What I saw was Ja'Gared Davis dropping an easy pick-6 (to his credit, still a nice pass breakup). Rock Dennis getting flagged for pass interference on an overthrown ball, which turned a 3 and 20 deep into a first and ten. One of the DLs -- I forget who -- jumping offsides om 4th and short. Our OLB getting turned around on several of the sweeps. Szymanski missing a field goal. That, in addition to the occasional errant pass and dropped catch is what lost us the game. Not the coaches. redpony wrote:I feel JJ has 'dumbed down' the offense for BLM so that he will not throw so many interceptions.
If that's true, I'd call that good coaching. We've proven we can beat good teams (ECU, Navy) by playing good, aggressive defense and not giving easy points to our opponents. redpony wrote:We should have run more in the second half when Navy started dropping 8 deep. Our O-line was doing a good job on protection and also creating holes for Shawnbrey and Line. Dink and dunk may not be exciting but it will move you down the field.
You're right on the money with this one. Maybe some screen passes? Going back to short pass to McNeal out on the perimeter -- I would like to have seen a couple more of those and a few less delayed handoffs.

Are people really [deleted] about JJ's attire? If we won lastnight, no one would say a word about his lei or the clothes he was wearing. quit looking for something to whine about just because we lost..the team fought hard and we are making progress.

I hope he succeds but my optimism for his sucess has cooled after the WSU and Navy losses.
I'm pretty darn tired of moral victories myself. That being said, I think JJ has done a much better job tweaking tweaking his schemes for the personnel this year. Just look how well the D has improved! Look how he's working the running game in.

The team is showing marked improvement, in terms of talent and play on the field. I don't believe in moral victories, but I do like to see improvement.
I don't care what JJ wears, as long as he puts this team on the right track for long-term success. However, if he insists on wearing a lei, and some here want a more local flavor, how about a lei made of barbed wire? That would be bad arse.

The delayed draw is the Run and shoot Running Game-what do you think our offensive line that contributed about 12 yards rushing in two weeks is going to drive block the defense. The Running Game was successful last Nite because Navy was trying to take away the pass and committed about 8 players to pass coverage. So SMU had the numbers running the ball-plus SMU used a TE for many plays-which is not Run and Shoot. Running in the Run and Shoot is all about deception and finesse. It always will be. Believe me if Navy had committed to the run SMU's running game would not have come close to last nites performance.
