Most stallions are not very reliable to be around. Geldings are also usually preferred for working stock over mares because their temperament is usually more even. I have spent a lot of time on horseback, both working around cattle and riding the high country with a rifle. Give me a gelding anytime over a mare or stallion.

Thank you for reinforcing my opinion. Our mascot is not ridden. Our mascot is not supposed to be even-tempered. Our mascot is not around to do ranch work. It is an unbridled, uppity, feisty Shetland that possesses qualities and characteristics that represent our University and our football team. Our flipping second century donation campaign is even called "SMU Unbridled". Peruna is the animal that represents these things.

But whatever, put it to bed, it's all been discussed over and over and over again. All three horses are there and will be on the field tomorrow night. Go SMU. Madeline, donate another 10 million dollars so we can build our own Mustang preserve on campus and let about a dozen of them live in peace and happiness.

The main quad is nice and open and there's even a water fountain.

Yep and he is so tiny that even if he is fractious he can be handled. Personally, I have always thought that the little pony was ludicrous looking and I have been a fan since 47-48. Real Mustangs, IMO, are a lot more fitting.

What does orange and white and a steer have to do with a mustang? A midget Shetland pony is not a mustang. It is a caricature of a mustang. A mustang could run that steer until he dropped. A wild mustang running free across the prairie is inspirational. To me a little pony is not. Just an opinion

He has donated 400 mil to Okie State? Why not buy the best coaches around if you are going to do that?

As to them having been neutered, I'm guessing those of you that so gleefully have fun with it don't advocate spaying and/or neutering your pets? Guess when I get home I need to start talking [deleted] to my kids about our beagle, since he's castrated and all, and pretty much does nothing.

We're playing in a damn bowl game tomorrow, folks. Get over it.

Absolutely right.

How sad that you feel the need to [deleted]. The Ponies are playing in a bowl game for the first time in ages. Personally, I feel no need to complain at all. I'm absolutely ecstatic and proud of my team and my alma mater.

He has pledged more than $500 million (a lot more, I think), but word is he has actually sent very little of the pledged money to Stillwater.

Knew the SID would promote the geldings and leave Peruna out of the mix. I will be very interested to see how much air time the geldings get with their cowboy RIDERS vs Peruna. The AD dept was mad when they found out Peruna was going because they thought this was their power play to get Peruna out of the way.

Oh and BTW, a huge thanks to DR. Turner to make sure Peruna was going. Without his telling the AD dept that Peruna was making the trip, he would not have gone.

Amen, we ought to be happy as a dead hog in the sunshine instead of carping about whether a stunted pony gets to go to Hawaii.

Yes, in a perfect world I would like for everything around SMU athletics to be terrific, not just the product being displayed on the field. Maybe I should send them a lovely, wonderful Christmas card just asking them nicely to please not put the horsies on the field. Whatever, one aspect of the experience has been corrected so let's just ignore the other nine that should be just as good, if not better. I just love how hating something completely unrelated to the actual football team must mean I don't care one lick that SMU is playing in its first bowl game in 25 years and has turned an incredibly significant corner in developing a competitive, winning football program. Bah.

Something SMU has done spectacularly well? Joining up with Hickman AFB to make sure our servicemen and women can go to the game on our dime and have a great time today. That's outstanding; kudos to June and SMU for making it happen, and I hope it gets air play tonight during the game.

Mustang fans are thrilled that our team has turned the corner and will be playing in a bowl game again!!! I am thrilled that the team achieved this goal and I am thrilled that our band, cheerleaders and Peruna will be there. You referred to him as a stunted pony, but Peruna has been our mascot for 75 years and I, for one, think he is the most adorable mascot there is and I am glad we have one that has spirit and does more than just stand around! You lucky ones that are there please don't forget to flash pony ears for me and do some cheering for me---Go Mustangs!!! Have fun and enjoy your trip!!!

Our football team has been pretty "adorable" for the last 25 years also since everyone has pretty much kicked us around. For that matter, our Mustangs have pretty much been anything but a consistent winning power for their whole history. Maybe a less "adorable" mascot might help in some way for SMU to become a perennial top 25 team. If a less "adorable" mascot helps, I am all for it!
