Tubbs

Postby OldPony » Sat Jan 17, 2004 2:54 pm

For all of you Tubbs fans. OU has now lost 3 in a row. Sampson is the same coach. Wonder if his assistants aren't as good as last year? OU will fall from Top 20 probably.

The soons looked good against Mizzou, but without Price, uO struggles against a good defensive team. In fact, every year Sampson has been there, he has always had ONE goto player to run his offense through. (Ryan Minor, Edwardo Najera, Price, etc..) This year, he doesn't seem to have that star player yet.

They will get better as Lavender (Mini-Me)improves.

Actually Lavender may be a part of the problem. He is gifted but only 5-8 or so and gets posted up by taller guards. UConn especially with Charlie Villenueava (sp) just shot over him and there was nothing he could do. He has a lot of talent but his height may keep him from ever being really special. I hope not. I like it when the little guys are successful.

This is a pretty strange post OP, considering that Sampsons assistant coaches are exactly the same this year as the year before. So, I guess you can stop wondering on that one.
Wonder if the difference between this year and last is that Price and White have departed? Maybe? Since that means they are starting almost all freshmen and sophomores now? Because in this recruiting class they signed all high school players, so the departure of their former JC players has left a gap in the team, age wise? maybe? Perhaps? I dont know, maybe.

The real question now is, what do you have against Jimmy Tubbs? Did the guy do something to your family that makes you so angry at him? Whats the real story?

I actually have nothing against Tubbs and hope he does well wherever he goes. I was actually just trying to get something started.
While I hope he is successsful, I don't see him as an answer to SMU's problems. I hear all of the complaints about how Dement can't develop big men etc and how Tubbs is this great coach that Dement sat on and wouldn't let him do what he knew how. Now that he is gone, Rack has shown as much one year improvement as anyone we have had in a long time (which I credit to one of our new assistants) and I see no drop off in any area. We'll have to see about recruiting still but we haven't exactly been killing the others in DFW recruiting over the past 10 years. Two or 3 good snags over 8 years is about what we can expect. I really don't want this to be a negative on Jimmy. He may be great but he hasn't proven anything on the college level yet except that he has recruiting ties in DFW.
OU had enough talent that the pollsters had them ranked as high as 4th (I think) and have now lost 4 in a row. I still think Sampson (and Tubbs) are good coaches. I think that the real problem at SMU isn't coaching although new blood may be necessary to build some excitement again. It is possible that if we started a hunt, we would find that no one with credentials would take the job unless more improvements are made to the facilities and the recruiting standards. If that could hasten changes, then I'm all for it. I think that Dement has done a good job for SMU and he has done it the right way. If we are going to be more successful, in my opinion those same standards won't be upheld. That isn't to say that that is bad though.

You have nothing against him, but you went to the trouble of starting a new thread just so you could use a lie to insinuate something negative about him? Gee, you're a nifty guy.

OP,

I can promise you that Tubbs knows more basketball than you EVER dreamed of knowing. Plus, he has won every place he has beent hehead coach. And he helped SMU, under Dement, recruit and sign one of the best, if not the best,
player(s) in Dallas each year. Granted, Shumate did not want to recruit Dallas so Tubbs was not allowed to recruit locally. But as soon as he was allowed to recruit the Dallas player, SMU started getting results.

And don't think for one second that Coach Sampson hired Jimmy Tubbs at OU because he needed his coaching help. Why, you ask? It's recruiitng, stupid.

Snub,

That is a different post topic.
If you would like to see Tubbs' Texas High School State championship banners...go to Kimball High School! The fact that Tubbs can and is a really good coach is easily accredited.

Go Mustangs...let's get on the winning the rest of the games on our schedule.

I would give J Tubbs a 3 year contract and see what he could do. He is a risky hire without any college head coach experience, but the price would be right and he could hit the ground running because he is already familiar with the program and has Dallas recruiting ties established. All considered, it would be a chance worth taking for a few years. This isn't to hate on Dement, he will land on his feet.
