Re: USC vacancyLooks like Carroll is gone from USC and Riley just signed a 3 year extension at Oregon State. Hope USC does not come after JJ.
Re: USC vacancyI am so sick and tired of coaches being able to run programs that circumvent the rules and then take off before the @#$@# hits the fan. Guys like Peter Carroll and John Calipari need to face punishment for the damage they cause. Instead, just the opposite happens, they go on to get bigger contracts and make more money at the next school.
Maybe coaches should be put on probation from coaching in the NCAA when their acts are directly reponsible for violations of NCAA rules.........or schools need to be hit hard financially so they are detered from hiring coaches that don't play by the rules.
Re: USC vacancyOr start paying the players......just have some consistency to the rules and processes.
Re: USC vacancyThe players are already getting paid. JJ said that one semester at SMU was worth $55000. Sounds high to me but they are still reaping big benefits when on an athletic scholarship.
Re: USC vacancy
not that high at all. the most recent letter from the University to parents put the cost of Room & Board + Tuition at $49K and change for "Joe Undergrad", so figure that the athletes get different food, trainers, per-diem, etc. you're in the mid $50's. Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
Re: USC vacancyIs that per semester or year? Sounds high for a semester. Even for a year though that is good pay for for a young man with no degree yet.
Re: USC vacancyYear.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
Re: USC vacancyYikes............. go to http.bleacherreport.com/articles/323819-whos-on-your-list-to-be-the-next-Trojan-coach
Very familiar picture.
Re: USC vacancyTo a big-time program that is not that much money relative to the money the athletes are bringing in for the school. Tickets, tv contracts, student applications, collegiate apparel, etc.....
I don't have an opinion on whether or not players should get paid, but the NCAA needs to be consistent with how they treat coaches and players. Dez Bryant was done away with this year for lying about talking to Deion, yet coaches have major infractions on their watch and just move on to the next gig.
Re: USC vacancyIt will be very interesting to see what direction they go as it seems that doors are closing on coaches out there at this moment. They could be facing another tough couple of years coming up.
On another note, more related to the possible sanctions that they face, it is absurd to connect the basketball recruiting scandals/issues. These are two entirely separate issues. Tim Floyd had direct involvement in NCAA basketball recruiting violations as well as other issues. There have been potential violations that are being investigated by USC and the NCAA in regards to its football program. At this point, Carroll has not been personally/directly linked to these issues other than the fact that he is the coach at the institution. In other cases of violations, where programs, most specifically basketball programs are found to be in violation of NCAA rules, coaches are more hands on in the violation of these rules and/or have a closer watch as there program contains only 15 players. Monitoring 15 players behavior on and off the court proves to be a much simpler task than that of any Division 1 Football coach especially in this day and age. Lumping any programs from any institutions possible infractions especially across different sports (ie. saying that Calipari and Carroll fall in the same boat) is ridiculous. Maybe he is getting out of town because of the circumstances, but saying that he brought this on the program and he is responsible in the same way as other violators of recruiting players or paying players is absurd. LA is a town in which everyone is looking to capitalize on the next big thing. Each of these situations, especially with Bush and McKnight involve the player and their families accepting extra benefits from outside agents with no apparent proof that the University was involved at this time. "At this time" is the key phrase because we don't know all of the facts yet. Players making bad decisions that result in the loss of their amateur athletic status and break NCAA rules is a violation that can result in NCAA sanctions for a University. So the possibilities are endless as to who is at fault here and what actually happened, but linking USC Football to other scandals and saying that Carroll did this to the program and is dumping it behind him is at this point irresponsible and ignorant.
Re: USC vacancyWhat does the scope of players have to do with anything? You are either the head of the organization and responsible or you are not. It doesn't matter if it is 15 players or 60.
Is a large bank CEO not as culpable as a small bank CEO because he has so many employees and can't possibly have the oversight? That is a ridiculous argument. It has been well documented by people that Carroll "ran a loose ship". And rather than stay loyal to the institution that took a chance on him after he floundered in the pros, he took off.....not because he had a wild hair to get back into the NFL, but because he didn't want to face the music and work through some challenges that he in fact helped create through his own atmosphere. You can't be the head of USC football and turn a blind eye, regardless of whether he has direct involvement or not. And because you turned a blind eye, you just ruined it for tons of players you recruited and gave your word to that are now on probation for the next 3 or 4 years of their football career. Oh, he has responsibility, regardless of whether or not money flowed directly from his palms. This guy cares about no one else except himself. I believe some of the former players are unhappy with him as well.....ask Lendale White.
Re: USC vacancyI have also heard Jack Del Rio as a possibility. He played for USC and has extensive coaching experience. Wouldn't be a bad hire in my opinion, but I don't know if he(or any potential replacement for that matter) will be able to duplicate the recruiting power that Carroll had. I also heard Petersen from Boise St. I like this option the most because I feel like his coaching ability is phenomenal. Coaching in a bigger market like LA would be a big change from Boise, but I think he could handle it very well. Boise is a great team, but I feel like their success has come from great coaching rather than elite players.

Re: USC vacancyWas Del Rio fired by Jacksonville?
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Re: USC vacancyReport: Jack Del Rio not at top of USC’s list
Pete Carroll is the new head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, and now the jockeying begins to replace him at Southern Cal. It appears their first choice to replace him is not Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, the 1985 Rose Bowl MVP with the Trojans. But he could move up the list. The Los Angeles Times reported that a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed Saturday that Oregon State coach Mike Riley was at the top of USC’s list, but he signed an extension late Sunday and doesn't appear to be available. Riley was among athletic director Mike Garrett’s top choices in 2000 before he hired Carroll. The Times reported that USC also is expected to gauge the interest of Del Rio and Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, both of whom played at USC. Several news outlets also have linked Del Rio to the potential USC opening. Dave Curtis of The Sporting News wrote that a Del Rio hire “makes the most sense†for USC. Del Rio, who just finished his seventh season with the Jaguars, is scheduled to meet with owner Wayne Weaver early this week. He has three years and $15 million remaining on his contract.
Re: USC vacancyI think they should also look at Steve Mariucci, Butch Davis, Dennis Erickson...
