Re: USC vacancyI thought this thread was about the titles and wins that the program was going to vacate after the Bush, Mayo and McKnight allegations are settled.
Derail the Frogs!
Re: USC vacancyThe previous post does not excuse Pete Carroll from blame for violations that occur under his watch as the head coach of a program, but what does happen to be a problem here is the generalization about violations. A loose ship as you call it can lead to problems as it may have here, but all violations are not created equally. What is a joke is that you spout off about violations and you can't distinguish between the program giving money, gifts, or extra benefits to players versus marketing and sports management firms giving money to potential stars in hopes of signing them to deals/contracts for their pro career when that time comes. A university and athletic department have to suffer the consequences for violations from the NCAA, but in all cases especially with the system in place requiring athletes having to be a certain age to enter the draft in their sport, these issues will arise. The point is not to free Pete Carroll or the university of any blame for the situation or any potential violations, but to mention that the rules and violations that are occurring in these situations cannot all be seen as one in the same because there are an incredible number of levels of rules and regulations based on involvement of these situations. You claim that it doesn't matter if the money went through his hands or not, but it does, if the money doesn't come through the program, university, or boosters, the violations are not the same as if it went back to a situation like the one we, SMU, were involved in. Things need to change in college athletics, but there are a 1000 different issues out there and they can't all be labeled the same.
On a note actually related to the topic, there are literally 30 good candidates out there that could be brought in and work/win with the talent that is there. They went 9-4 with injuries to key players spread throughout the season at key key skill positions. This program when healthy, always (since Carroll tookover) has great talent and speed. No good coach out there for USC to hire is going to have a tough time maintaining that program barring any really strict sanctions based on information not yet public. NFL development is a high priority that previous USC commits have had when signing. So, while I personally believe a good college guy like a Sarkisian, Kiffin, Riley, Patterson, or guys like that would be great. I think the program has a better angle with guys like Fischer or Del Rio even though I'm not a huge fan of Del Rio. Harbaugh would be perfect though his recent past with Stanford and verbal sparring with SC would likely negate him as an option.
Re: USC vacancywould someone mind summarizing the above post and posting bullet points?
thanks
Re: USC vacancy
Not a chance. That guy has two posts and they are both about a thousand words each. Derail the Frogs!
Re: USC vacancyIMO Fisher or Del Rio would be great. Actually I would prefer Fisher just to cause Bud Adams some pain. Used to love the Oilers-hate the titans.
GO PONIES!!!
Re: USC vacancySMUKSIG21:
No matter who gave what to who, the fact is that it's Carroll's job to make sure that his players know the rules, and play by the rules. So Carroll is very culpable in this. In my opinion he's a piece of garbage for leaving USC amid all this controversy. If they conclude that the USC football program did commit violations it gets even worse for everyone except Carroll. Congrats Pete, you built a winning program, through (at the least) very questionable means, and now you get to slide out unscathed to Seattle, while the USC Trojans are left in shambles. This brings up another point. Why is Seattle so interested in a 2 time loser on the NFL level? When was the last time a college coach proved that he could get it done in the NFL? Seems like it's been quite a while. Jimmy Johnson might be the most recent. And now Seattle is bringing in someone who's already shown he can't succeed at that level. Here's to those that wish us well and all the rest can go to hell!!!
Re: USC vacancyHe is above 500 as an nfl coach...
Re: USC vacancyHe went 6-10 in his only season with the Jets. A couple years later he went to the Pats right after Parcells (cupboard quite full) won the AFC East title and lost their first playoff game, lost in the wildcard round next year, and missed the playoffs the year after, then he was canned. 33-31; not exactly setting the world on fire.

Re: USC vacancy
You mean one year is worth $55,000.00, before taxes btw.
Re: USC vacancyA program where the coach puts his head in the sand is worse according to the NCAA than the Coach who pays his players directly. What? Look at the punishment to SMU where Coach Collins put his head in the sand while boosters had a payroll to meet vs. UNLV where Tark the Shark was knee deep in it. And you say that a problem in one sport doesn't matter in punishment in another sport. Check out the NCAA rulebook. The entire athletic program is on probation during the time any sport is in a sanctioned punishment. That means that if for example a schools tennis program was being punished and they found a violation in the football program, the football program gets whacked that much harder.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
