Reports: Tennessee hiring Derek Dooley
By Dave Hooker
Updated Friday, January 15, 2010

Derek Dooley will reportedly be named Tennessee's next head coach even though the Vols still have one interview left to conduct.

Multiple media sources are reporting that the former Louisiana Tech head coach has agreed to replace Lane Kiffin, who left UT for Southern California on Tuesday, and a deal is imminent.

UT athletic director Mike Hamilton is set to interview interim head coach Kippy Brown at 1 p.m.

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham was the other finalist, according to a source close to the process.

A Louisiana Tech spokesperson declined to confirm or deny the move but said to check back later this afternoon.

Dooley, who has been the coach at Tech for three seasons, canceled end-of-the-seasonmeetings with his players on Wednesday and left Ruston to meet with UT officials on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the Gannett News Service. Dooley was also the athletic director of Louisiana Tech since March 2008.

Dooley, 41, is 17-20 at Louisiana Tech with a 12-12 record in the Western Athletic Conference. Tech went 8-5 in 2008 and won the Independence Bowl. Dooley has a law degree from Georgia and a bachelor's degree in government and foreign affairs from Virginia, where he played receiver.

Dooley is the son of legendary Georgia coach Vince Dooley. Derek Dooley coached under Nick Saban as recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach from 2000 to February 2003, then was named special teams coach and running backs coach for the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Dooley followed Saban to the Miami Dolphins where he was tight ends coach in 2005 before accepting the Louisiana Tech job in 2006.

Dooley came highly recommended by Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, who was thought to be one of UT's first targets. Muschamp, however, decided to stay at Texas. Texas Christian's Gary Patterson and Air Force's Troy Calhoun also issued public statements that they would not be leaving their respective schools. The Vols were in serious talks with former coach David Cutcliffe, but Cutcliffe, now the head coach at Duke, and UT couldn't come together on Cutcliffe's staff at UT.

Deal not done. Sumlin is still in the running even though he signed a new contract. Per ESPN:

Louisiana Tech football coach Derek Dooley, son of legendary coach Vince Dooley, has emerged as the top candidate to replace Lane Kiffin as Tennessee's football coach, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Friday.

An announcement could be made by Tennessee officials as early as Friday. However, a source told ESPN.com that the deal is not finalized and that Houston's Kevin Sumlin remains a possibility.

Kiffin left Tuesday to become the coach at USC.

Dooley, in his third season at Louisiana Tech, also is the school's athletic director. He played football at Virginia and has a law degree from Georgia. He was a recruiting coordinator and an assistant coach on Nick Saban's staff at LSU.

But according to some of our fans, when your coach -- in this case June Jones -- signs a contract extension that means he isn't going anywhere and he'll be there for its duration.

Please help me understand that some of you really aren't that gullable. Shame on you if you really, and I mean really believe it to be otherwise.

Technically Sumlin agreed to a new contract. It has not been executed.

Sumlin agrees to new UH deal
Coach awaits approval from school’s board of regents

Kevin Sumlin has agreed to terms of a new contract as head football coach of the Houston Cougars, a person familiar with the negotiations said Thursday.

The next step in the process would be to present the agreement to the UH board of regents, which would have to approve the terms before Sumlin can sign a new contract.

It is not certain when the regents will meet to review the agreement reached between UH athletic director Mack Rhoades and Sumlin. Rhoades was not available for comment Thursday. Sumlin, who was honored Thursday night as one of the seven finalists for the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award, declined comment on his contract status.
