That is a ridiculous statement and just plain pathetic if true. How many coaches get five years to start a rebuild. I interpret a "rebuild" as starting day one. Otherwise we are saying, 'yeah go ahead take $2.5 million dollars jacking around and in year five or six, we'd like you to get down to business'. Let's distance ourselves from Doherty and SMU specifically for a second. Has any coach in modern college hoops had as bad a start to his career at a school and turned that school around to make his team top 25 or an annual tourney participant? I'd love someone to tell me the answer is yes, because otherwise Orsini is just stealing our money and waiting Doherty out. The fact that so many SMU fans are conditioned to accept mediocrity is very disappointing.

I would like to see a change but I don't see it happening this season. Only time will tell.

I did a little test, I looked at the biographies of successful coaches who are known quantities in the first five years of their tenures at whereever they went. I looked at Mike Jarvis, John Thompson, Jim Valvano, Coach K, Bobby Knight, Billy Donovan, Billy Gillespie, Gary Williams, Al McGuire, Fran Franscilla, Rick Pitino and I couldn't find a single one that had more than two losing seasons in a row. I figured that our goal is is to be great for a long period of time. These guys have been there consistently throughout their careers. Doh hasn't.

Check out the problems and record of P.J. Carlisimo at Seaton Hall whose program in the late 80s mirrored those of SMU today. Private school in a major metropolitan area, could not recruit locally, some historic tradition, getting killed for years in the Big East, playing in the then cavernous Brenden Bryne Aena ( home of the miserable Nets) Meadow Lands some 12 miles from campus, competing with 8 major pro teams for the $$$ and nothing happening. Carlisimo's dad was some major basketball sports figure in the area ( forgot his exact position) so there was name recognition in the region. Situaton was so bad he was hanged in efigy in the middle of the campus his 4th year in their rebuild and the media was all over the program . Finally got some local area recruits and one big time Australian player. Two years later he played for the national championship and lost a heart breaker.

HOPE! You don't build a basketball program on HOPE...he tried that four years ago with a top 25 recruited class of freshmen...where are they now.

forget the freshmen coming next year for a minute. Can anybody name ONE single thing that they saw in person at Moody tonight that makes them excited about next year or the future? i'm looking for anything, because I watch closely, the bench, the body language, warm ups and I see nothing.

I saw Papa have a night where he missed probably 6 to 8 points he shouldve gotten, and still go for 18 and 13 against a lottery pick.

and where's that gonna get us? Papa the senior and the 3 freshman to the big dance next year! Truth is Papas career is on the verge of garbage time because we are starting what amounts to a total rebuild. you saw a glimmer of what most of next year very well might look like without a veteran DWill to score the ball.

At their fourth Division I school? There was conference improvement this year and McCoy was injured late. Also, beat Memphis in grand fashion, but so did Houston whose coach is in a similar (probably more precarious) situation.

hey, you said name one thing. I did. You may be right about next year, but I think we're likely stuck w/ Doh either way. Since you said to ignore next year's freshmen, how bout Pats? Maybe we can look forward to him? Good to see you Lifeson. As Bill mentioned, with no spring game it may be Lubbock be for we all gather round to have a cold one again.

i haven't been to a bball game in two years. i vote with my feet. i have watched a couple of games on tv. saw them beat a very bad ecu team. i'm content to watch other college games. can't wait for march madness.
way to be a fan If McCoy played like he did last year (avg 15 pts?), we win at least 5 more games this year. That is not changing things much, but that was a HUGE blow to the team. Our goal is to make the tourney - we seem way far away to do that to me.
