He's not getting a big reception by the fans. He did well at Tech until he lost nine scholarships with the academic fraud. However, he hasn't been a head coach in nine years. He spent eight of those years with his mentor (Sutton) at OK State.

Do you think the SMU admin would approve hiring BCG, given his past transgressions?

According to some sources, the athletic director would...the president wouldn't.

Wow. Very underwhelming hire. I just wonder if Houston couldn't convince Gillespie to take the job or if Gillespie couldn't convince Houston to hire him? At least with Doh we were willing to take a big swing (and miss) but this hire seems more like a sacrifice bunt. Sure hope SMU does better then this next spring!!

I'm wondering if BCG wasn't convinced that UH is fully committed, as per his remarks posted earlier. No basketball facility, etc etc. Or he may have his eye on another job open or about to open. Or one of the no-Doh boosters is paying him some $ to lay low for another year.

First Penders now Dickey. That's a lateral move, if not a step down IMO. Cougar High where old SWC coaches go to die? I can't wait to see where Tony Barone shows up, LOL.

I've heard his staff is solid but doesn't have any hustle types. No idea what a first year AD was going for w/this hire. Lateral move
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

I think that Coach Dickey will produce similar results to those of Penders, but will do so with local players so it will be much more exciting to watch!!!! After all, doesn't everyone watch basketball for the player introductions?

One can only hope. Very surprised BCG hasn't been snatched up by a school with all the vacancies out there.

Dickey was an excellent hire for U of H. He said keeping the local talent was a priority & he's backing that up by assembling an excellent staff with proven track records successfully recruiting Houston & Texas (see below). Not the big name hire but a solid basketball coach who really knows Texas. The AD has identified the model he wants & has hired the right HC to follow the script.
He was right on the money with his football HC hire & I think he has done the same with his basketball HC hire. H Town is loaded with talent & watch out if they start landing the locals.

COLLEGE NEWS!
In addition to Daniyal Robinson (Iowa State), Ulric Maligi and Alvin Brooks have been hired as assistant coaches on the University of Houston staff. Both are home run hires by head coach James Dickey. Why? Well, there ain't many folk in the true basketball loops who can say anything bad about Brooks. He's been there, done that, and has consistently kept it "100" with the powers that be.
As for Maligi, he comes over from Stephen F. Austin by way of UT-Arlington. Before that, he was a summer coach with the Dallas Mustangs (who by the way is the current #1 summer team in Texas). Everyone in the loop knows that he's the main man responsible for Yates HS pg Darius Gardner and Elsik HS leading scorer Amos Olatayo inking with SFA. He's what I call a young "head hunter". Maligi is at that age where he can cite lyrics to Lil Wayne, Jay Z, and Slim Thug songs, and can interpret the ever changing language of today's late teenagers. Meaning, he will get players, keep them happy, and get his boss pay raises.
