Mustangs Will Play Tulsa In Semifinals Saturday

HOUSTON, Texas (SMU) - For the first time in four years SMU will face rival Tulsa in the semifinals of the Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship. The Mustangs dealt No. 5 seed UAB a 4-0 loss at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the campus of Rice University in Houston Friday afternoon.
The Mustangs push their winning streak to five-consecutive matches and winners of eight of the last nine. SMU also improves to 15-10 overall, while UAB stops at 12-9.
No. 72 SMU racked up two quick points at No. 2 and 4 singles as juniors David Costa and Darren Walsh defeated sophomores Danny Manlow (6-0, 6-4 ) and Daniel Moser (6-3, 6-4), respectively. Walsh's win improved his winning streak to a team-best 11 matches.
A pair of freshmen finished the match off for the Mustangs as Pablo Perez-Esnaola cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win over junior Tyrone Ewels. Tobias Flood ended competition as he collected a pair of 6-3 set scores over UAB freshman David Zimmerman.
Saturday's semifinal appearance marks the fifth straight for SMU. The Mustangs will be looking for their first appearance in the championship match.
