Matthews is a rookie too and who knows if he'll remain good in the pros (a lot of experts called that pick a reach) and Sproles proved he cannot handle the load on his own, so Shawnbrey could make the team as a practice teamer at the very worst.
The "Reach" with Mathews isn't that he wasn't first round material or a good draft pick, it was that moving up to the #12 spot was higher than he was expected to be drafted at. There's no way that Mathews doesn't get a few years regardless of production. I mean, even he who's name is unmentioned got two seasons on the field and three years on the payroll.
I think they keep him on the roster and don't expose him to the Practice Squad, where he'll get snatched up by another team.
