Re: Fire Doherty!
I agree and I'm not defending Doh's inability to recruit locally at all. Just pointing out that he has failed to turn this program into a winner and has actually managed to bring it down further than it already was, so it makes perfect sense that local kids don't want to go to the loser school in the neighborhood. Had Doh succeeded in building a winning program - regardless of where the talent came from - then local kids would be a lot more interested in picking SMU over some bigger schools out there. Winning and being relevant trumps any of the other issues that often come up regarding the inability to recruit locally.
Re: Fire Doherty!
I certinally understand the differences between the two sports and don't need a lecture ![]() And hopefully bottom line, next year will be the deciding factor on if he stays or if he goes.
Re: Fire Doherty!I really don't know what people are arguing over around here. This program hasn't been rebuilt in the way we'd all like, it really doesn't matter the reason. Ultimately, SMU is an incredibly difficult job, some of which is our doing. It's not an even playing field, just better then it was. That said, none of it really matters. Win some games. This is completely Doh's team now, he has his own senior class etc. After the Tubbs debacle, you had to give the next coach a full run. Guess what, end of next year is a full run. Win some games.
I hate the pigtails signing, hate it, but I've never seen the kid. I have seen some of the other kids, so this particular position hunt was especially gruesome for me, especially watching so closely. It didn't go down the way many think it did, and Doh really likes his kid, but to me it's a big trail loss until proven otherwise. Smith & Vilde in particular were real trail victories. The issue here is starting FIre Doherty threads mid-recruiting season over a a perceived recruiting miss, when the reality is that most have no idea what happened. Half you guys, invade any recruit based thread to add snipes like 'why would he sign here, he'll just get worse under Doh.' Those types of posts aren't SMU fans are they? You don't think kids being recruited by SMU check the boards? Sorta sucks when all the kids threads turn into one-off blasts, by haters, aimed at the longevity of the coach recruiting the kid. Meanwhile, like 4 of us look into the kid to see if he can play etc. This thread was started by a poster pissed off that we signed one kid over another, neither of which he's seen play. That's just being a [deleted], Way to welcome a kid the staff likes, whether you liked his 10 minute youtube or not. It's a poor reflection and it does matter. why are people livid over recruiting, when the '10 class, even w/pigtails, is upper 3rd in the league? Then you get the sign Mikhail Mclean threads, which is hilarious. The fact that Mclean is going to houston, our rival, and we got Smith, is a coup. We didn't take him cause we took someone most regard as the better prospect, when we had the choice of Mclean. The whole concept doesn't even make sense given our ship situation. Should we have taken Preston Purifoy over Pats? Time will tell, but anyone saying they know how that will turn out is lying. Then there are those claiming Lamar, Texas St, even North Texas are better programs. Same w/UTA. That's a big fat hairy bull turd that holds no truth nationally, whatsoever. Just b/c you can dance on occasion, by winning a nothing league, w/an undeserved automatic bid, doesn't make you worth a damn. Let UNT play in the old WAC 16 & now CUSA, and tell me how many times they'd advance or even have winning records. Lastly, this team improved 5 games last year, w/personnel that made far less sense for the system, then what we'll see this year. I'm not saying we're world-beaters, or even going to contend for the freakin CBI, just that this program is no longer the disaster some are making it out to be. Is it where we want to be, hell no. Is it in a significantly better place then it's been years, w/o question. This is pretty far from a complete rebuild at this point. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Fire Doherty!Hey ponydoh....are you still on the bandwagon after running another player off???
Please go and hire BCG...
Re: Fire Doherty!
I'm not on any bandwagon, nor have I ever been. Just want what I think is best for the program. This certainly is banner bad week..lol. You can't make this ish up “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Fire Doherty!I know you are pro SMU and not necc. Doh, just tired of anyone defending this guy at this point...
Re: Fire Doherty!
I just want the bleeding to stop for a freaking minute “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Fire Doherty!
That's what scares me. I've seen their track record with 'kids they really like'. The McCoy debacle strengthens my resolve, FIRE DOH! How many coaches can have two debacles in one week? Stop the bleeding indeed. And [deleted]? Really? Are you running out of tired excuses and must resort to name calling? You can be a youtube talent evaluator, but I show my support of this program by spending, I mean throwing away, money on season tickets, and I actually show up and sit through the painful crap Doh puts out there. My support for this program shouldn't be questioned. Unlike some, I don't support giving him another year and digging us deeper in the hole, because I care! #NewLobCity
Re: Fire Doherty!fire doh already...i saw up close what he did at UNC, and it is happening here at SMU. Truly sad.
And ponydoh, I like your insight and thank you for supportingh smu bb...but how anyone can remotely defend Doherty at this point is beyond me. All I am hearing are excuses..."this is a tough job"..."academics are too hard, we can't get players in"...etc. After this long, the excuses just seem weak. Get the job done or be replaced by someone who can. Period.
Re: Fire Doherty!BCG, i don't like him as mcuh as the next guy, but he wins...
Re: Fire Doherty!
So you'd prefer the head coach bring in kids he hates? I'm not saying he's the worlds greatest evaluator, I'm saying he's the head coach, so his evaluation is what we're stuck with, until the plug is pulled. Why crush the kid's thread? Why use every thread, even if it's about a recruit, to find reason to bash the coach? Why start threads about firing the head guy b/c he just signed a kid you've never seen? We all want success or change, but sandbagging the program when change isnt coming for at least a year, really isn't that noble. I applaud your season tix, and didn't mean to suggest you are a [deleted]. However, the creation of this thread, for the reasons I've mentioned, was a [deleted] move “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Fire Doherty!
I agree w/everything you've said, and ultimately you have to win. I'm merely for giving it the full 5 year timeframe for reasons well beyond what's happening on the floor. All of what's happening is just more ammo for change, nobody is denying that. It is a tough job, so careful consideration must be made when any new hire is made. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Fire Doherty!Doh = Phil Bennet...
Future lies as an asst. at a nice program...
Re: Fire Doherty! As I said in another post, we have to play the hand we have at this point. SO and GT have decided to keep Doh. There are no other cards to be dealt at this point, this year. He has to win or leave, that sums it up. His seat is very, very hot.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
