Comment about our basketball strength of schedule

Postby CalallenStang » Mon May 17, 2010 7:09 pm

from the Memphis board:

I think all of this OOC scheduling stuff is just an excuse. These schools need to recruit better and play better basketball, bottom line. Here are the non-conf schedule strengths (via rpi) last season... Everyone scheduled in-line with how good their team was with the exception of SMU who scheduled up (and that's not really a bad thing either) and UTEP who didn't have Caracter till 2nd semester.

UTEP: 131
UAB: 87
MEM: 65
TULSA: 107
MARSHALL: 69
HOU: 115
SO MISS: 189
UCF: 197
SMU: 209
TULANE: 254
RICE: 265

He backs it up with the facts - our SOS was significantly higher than other programs near us in RPI.

That's what I don't get, our SoS was really pretty good and definitely better than most at our level, yet I see a lot of people [deleted] about who we played last year. Yes, I would love for us to play nothing but big boys, but until we get the team and or coach to compete it just makes no sense to schedule like that.

I thought last year's schedule was perfect for where we are at, a few big schools/teams and some local flair.

Hoping next year will be similar.
Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!

I'd just prefer a few more mid OOC games in the schedule, if just for interest. For personal reasons, I find games like SMU vs CoC, or SMU vs VCU, SMU vs ST Marys to be really interesting match-ups. I'd love to see us do everything possible to play holiday tourneys, don't care if it's in Puerto Rico or Alaska. Whatever it takes to get odd hour TV time on real networks. Maybe one more big as well, so long as it's not from the Big 12.

BTW, RPI i is an awful tool. I have no idea how it's become as prominent as it has
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones
