Owl President - expect more realignment in next few months

Postby SMU89 » Mon Jun 28, 2010 12:43 am

For now, the frenzy of conference realignment seems to be abating. However, there are indications that other schools are continuing, some very vocally, to press to move into other conferences. While the situation may be stabilizing for the moment, many expect further changes in the next few months.

Wanting our candy and eating it too.

Rice University is a wonderful academic institution and one that SMU should always be proud to have an affiliation, athletics aside. The Rice President is correct that further separation of have's and have nots is a problem for all colleges. BC$ enables the bad behavior and results we experience now and through the BCS history.

Don't know the answer, but SMU should aspire to be successful in all dimensions. BCS Conference membership is the dividing line and shouldn't for the sake of the Rice's and Tulane's of the world, as well as SMU.

This reads more like a surrender statement than a plan for the future.

If we want to play big-time football we need to get as far away from Rice and Tulane as we can.

I agree with couch'em, but I think the writing might already be on the wall for SMU, Baylor and other private schools. The big boys, also known as state schools, do not want anything to do with private schools other than Notre Dame. Unless you deliever big TV markets with/ and large followings you are not wanted.

Rice brings huge reputational, academic and competitive value to any collegiate athletic enterprise, enhanced by our location in the fourth largest city in the country. While we are immensely proud of our student-athletes' successes, we also never lose sight of our core mission of education, research and public service. And we never forget the importance of our alumni and friends, whose deep commitment to our educational and athletic endeavors is a huge part of our success. Thank you for your support of Rice University and the Rice Owls.

Sincerely,

David W. Leebron

President

And BC$ Privates with nominal success in either: Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Baylor. Boston College is not bad in FB, btw.

A third category is U.S. Service Academies, who have their own source of funding, the US taxpaper. You would want them at the table.

Good point. Being in Texas with as many D-1 teams that we offer is unique. What better way to exclude the SMUs & TCUs of the world from competing than to cut us off from the life blood we need, which is $$$ - from the bcs-BS (the lay of the land nowdays). Thus we'll never be able to build that TV market without a way to compete. Duuhh

The only private schools with football success recently are Miami, Wake Forest (ACC Champ), BC, Vandy (limited to one year), Northwestern (up and down), USC, TCU, and BYU. Stanford and Duke stink. Villanova was FCS champion, but are not ready for prime time.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
