Since the league gathered for the conference tournament in March, six programs have changed coaches and nine of the 15 players who earned all-conference honors have departed. Still, that won't prevent us from taking a stab at the annual way-too-early preseason predictions, which are subject to change based on new roster information that might emerge before the fall.

The writer, from the Memphis Commercial Appeal, picks SMU to finish in last place (12th) in CUSA. Makes a mention to our victory over Memphis State and maybe takes a shot at Doherty for calling it a "signature win". He may be a little pissy about things being a bit chippy between SMU/Memphis last season.

I don't see how you can pick SMU to finish last. Cites our roster losses as reasons for pessimism. However, our losses aren't nearly as great as those of UH (whom we tied at 7-9 in conference last season and he picked a few spots ahead of us) which lost the #1 and #7 scorers in CUSA and their PG. Also, how ANYONE can be picked behind Tulane is beyond me. Also, one of those 6 of 15 returning all conference players is at none other than SMU.

Season still will hinge heavily on the newcomers, improvement of Justin Haynes, and Dia repeating his All CUSA performance. With that said, I expect to be far better than this writer anticipates.

Dan Wolken is an idiot. He predicted UAB to finish in last place last year.

He also once wrote that SMU can't draw 4,000 to a basketball game against a top 5 team. Odd since the last time we played a top 5 team, it was Memphis, and we drew 7,500.

Even the saner Memphis fans don't like the guy. He writes things not to be right, but to stir the pot so as to increase readership of his columns, listeners to his radio show, etc. etc. etc.

Being right doesn't sell. Controversy/negativity sells.
