Are we jaded by past recruiting?

Postby Hey June » Mon Jul 05, 2010 4:41 pm

Every now and then you hear about other schools losing several guys to grades. Are they all non-qualifiers? Or does this stuff (denying qualified recruits) happen elsewhere?

I wonder if SMU has spent so much time recruiting scholars in years past that we never had to worry about "on the bubble" academic cases.

Anyone know? Or know where to find out?

There will always be athletes who fail, but schools that want to play football find a way to keep players eligable. You can't help it if a kid just won't do the minimum that's requried for the academic dog & pony show, but if you are getting in athletes that wouldn't get in as a regular student you must have special treatment for them in classes.

Which begs the question, what is the new minimum?

SMU does not want dumb dumbs, period. Even with the Paul Loyd Learning Center some kids are not college material. That being said, If the NCAA says they are qualified for college, I defer to their standard and then try to give the kid that wants to come to SMU a fighting chance to graduate.

IMHO, no school should go to any bowl games if they do not have a 50% graduation rate over a rolling 4 year term.

And, I would expect SMU to bo better than that as the school better than that.

What was TEXAS' grad percentage their last National Champ year. 28% They should be ashamed.

Graduation rates should never be used-and that will never happen. APR might make some sense. First its a more chronilogically relevant barometer and it doesn't penalize the best teams with the best players that turn pro.

The NCAA uses Academic Progress Ratio to determine which schools keep athletes eligible toward a degree whether they later transfer, quit, get injured, graduate or in the case of top schools-have athletes turn pro. For example SMU is not penalized when Emanuel Sanders graduates and turns pro but SMU loses points when Shawnbrey McNeal turns pro not in good standing academically. Right now there are a number of schools which are losing scholarships because of a low APR score. Other schools are given a year to improve or face loss of scholarship. Not surprising SMU and UT have the exact same APR. In recent past years UT has led the Big 12 in APR.

without looking, I'm guessing it's the schools w/ fewer resources and less $ for tutors etc

It's not fair doing this, because an average, is, well, an average.

but if not for UAB bringing the average down, CUSA would trail ONLY the ACC and the Big-10 in APR. Nebraska shifting will lower both the Big-12 and the Big-10 ratings. Colorado shifting will move the Big-12 rating back up, and will lower the PAC-10 by a decent chunk.

Ender, no surprise there. Rice, SMU, Tulane and Tulsa are private schools that really focus on academic qualifications of their recruits. And any mouth breather can graduate from UH and Marshall.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
