Best of luck Coach Dement..

Post by Hoop Fan »

rarely are people as good/smart as they might seem and likewise rarely are folks as bad/dumb as it can seem. This situation went stale. I look for Dement to land on his feet and finish his career out very respectably. I sincerely hope that happens.

I might add that I take no pleasure in the firing of a coach. It means he or she failed as did the team and school. We should acknowledge that he or she probably did their best, which turned out to be inadequate.

To attribute negativity to the event diminishes everyone involvement, including us. It didn't work out. When Dement arrived, he was highly valued and did achieve some success during the time he coached.

I wish him well and good luck to Copeland on the Interim and permanent replacement. It also means that a commitment to renovating Moody becomes a condition in hiring a strong coach, which is good.

I'll add that I wish I could say SMU gave him all the tools he needed to be successful, but I don't know if can say that. Hopefully, the next coach will be given the support and resources necessary to turn this program around.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

he had the second highest graduation rate in the nation behind Stanford.
we can certainly be proud of that. didn't hear about sex parties and rape either. He'll land on his feet.
moving forward, let's hope someone can turn this around.

for those that wanted to fire him, be careful what you wish for.
your last wish resulted in a 0-12 football team.

I wish Coach Dement much success and happiness in the future.

The SMU men's basketball program had integrity during his years at the helm.

No sex parties?

Post by Longtime »

No sex parties? Well, except for the one in Fresno right after we choked in the WAC tournament and cost ourselves an NCAA bid.

Remember the cheerleader who accused Sasser of sexual assault? The basketball team and cheerleaders were partying together in their hotel rooms that night. Much drinking and fooling around, as I recall.

And then SMU kept it under wraps and didn't take action against Sasser or others (wasn't Dwayne Floyd involved?) until after our failed NIT appearance. Is that what you mean by integrity?

While I agree that it was time for a change, I've met Mike Dement several times, and he is generally a very good man. He was caught in a downward spiral here, and it's best for both parties to have a new coach here and a new home for Coach Dement. He should be proud that he had nine years of student-athletes who didn't forget about the "student" part of that term. The academic performance of his players is something that too often is overlooked. He didn't win enough for many fans, but he ran the program with class.
I echo the thoughts expressed here -- may Coach Dement enjoy great success and happiness. Didn't work out here, but he's a good guy. I'll root for him to succeed at his next job.

Moving on

Post by Sam I Am »

Dement knew that every coach is hired to be fired. It's only a matter of time in most instances. Nine years is a long run for anyone. He tried and the end finally came. It is a sad part of the profession he is in, but it had to be done. So we wish him success, and then move on.
