SMU gets Green Light to develop Mrs. Baird's site

Postby Water Pony » Thu Aug 12, 2010 4:52 pm

SMU got the go-ahead from the Dallas City Council Wednesday to proceed on development plans for the former Mrs. Baird's bakery site on Mockingbird Lane.

The university, which already owns the land, needed a "municipal setting desgination'' from Dallas because previous owners let contaminants seep into the groundwater. The problem came from the bakery, a dry cleaners and a gas station in the commercial strip.

The MSD is basically a restrictive covenent that blocks SMU or future owners from using the groundwater for new developments.

University officials say they plan to put tennis courts, an electrical substation and a data center on the site.

SMU plans to start demolition in October and construction will begin next year.

Earlier this summer, we reported that the Town of Highland Park had agreed to share the cost of a traffic study with SMU. The key question is how demolition and construction will work around road traffic on the already-congested thorougfare.

We'll be looking for the final report to show up on an agenda at Town Hall soon.

It's going to be sad to watch the dismantling of the buildings where the old 7-11, Texaco station, and especially Ms. Bairds used to be. I remember coming back from the Cotton bowl after an early season win and congratulating another student who was buying a six-pack, and the student turned around and it was Ron Meyer....man, he was pumped up !

Used to be quicker to run across Mockingbird and pound a tall boy than hike back to the tailgate spot. Time to go dig out my flask.

They are getting rid of the 7-11 and the Dry Cleaners? SMU owns the entire section?

Yep. They own that entire parcel on the corner there. It was chained up and boarded up in the past week or so.

The old 7-11, dry clearners/gas station, and liquor store sites are about to be history..long live the smell of fresh bread wafting over the Freshman Quad.

Wow, that 7-11 was very busy. Too bad. I worked at Mr Ghattis right there in High School...haha.
The liquor store was the closest to campus, where is closest now?

I think the Cork n' Bottle near Mockingbird and Greenville is the closest liquor store now. Definitely nothing a short walk away.
