No, Doherty should not have been gone after three years. If you truly believe that, than you possess a truly incredible inability to view the larger picture, or look any farther in to the future than the edge of your nose. Doherty in all likelihood will not be the long-term solution here at SMU, and Orsini deserves his share of the blame for that. Having said that, it is borderline certifiably insane to %&*@-can Doherty after only three years when it was agreed upon on all sides that he would need five to "turn the program around". This coming on the heels of firing a black coach at a white-washed semi-elitist university for what amounted to "mystery secondary infractions". What half-decent head coaching candidate would ever in their right mind consider working at SMU after those two events? The position itself really needed rehabilitation, even if it means languishing under Doherty for another 2-3 years. We all look at it with a very short frame of reference, but what's going to be better for SMU hoops in 5, 10, 15 years? Unless you have a legitimate, very reliable list of quality names that would have been seriously interested in the SMU job in 2008 when Doherty was "fired" or 800k to 2 million sitting around to help grossly overpay a coach to come here, please revisit your opinion. This isn't fantasy land where we can up and fire coaches just whenever we feel like.

I have long thought that we needed to keep this coach for his full contract (or at least most of it) so that the word would be out that the Tubbs fiasco was just an abberation and not the "true" SMU. That said, Doh has been an unmitigated disappointment. He is a "big name" coach who was doing penance for his stint at UNC. But he never got traction here for whatever reason and never showed even a hint of what he was reputed to be (a great recruiter). Once he put aside the Notre Dame colors and UNC blue, he showed he was just another coach. He needs to show that he can win a majority of his conference games. If he does, great, he's turning the corner. If not, I will be one of the vast majority of voices who say, its time for him to go back to the booth.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I completely agree. Following this season, he will have had his "five years" that was agreed upon. Any reasonable individual can agree that five full seasons and recruiting classes is enough to make a positive impact in basketball to warrant retaining or extension for a moderate amount of time. It also has, hopefully, allowed our benevolent athletic department to collect a sizeable war chest to buy Doherty out of his remaining years and pursue legitimate coaching candidates, and to put together a solid list of potential hires. The onus is now completely on Doherty. He must win enough to save his own hide, and hopefully he isn't short-sighted, or selfish enough to sacrifice future recruiting to slap around cupcakes and pansies this season to accumulate enough wins to grudgingly force us to retain him. We all want a successful, proud basketball program here again. Hopefully Doherty and co. magically will themselves to win about 22-25 games, and he's able to put together a pretty awesome 2011 class. If not, let the guillotine fall!

Jones will have better options after this season than SMU. The time to money whip him into a job has probably passed.
I went back and looked at some previous posts regarding Jones (credit to Stallion)... he would have been a great coach for the "we need local players" crowd. More than half of the roster played either high school or juco basketball in or around the DFW area.

Why would he leave a consistent winner for a consistent loser? He has built UNT's basketball program from the ground up and is now reaping the benefits. UNT has 7 seniors this year and will have a great recruiting class coming in next season. There is no doubt that UNT is a much better program at the moment than SMU. UNT got this kid away from much better basketball schools than SMU. I think SMU is the least of UNT's worries when it comes to basketball....
something most UNT grads do not understand....$$$$

Jones will probably leave UNT in the future for more $$$, but it sure wouldn't be for pony land.

Never underestimate our ability or willingness to grossly overpay someone to do a job for us.

You wouldn;t even be a blip on UNT JJ's radar. smu is a graveyard for coaches and he will opt for a much better gig. LSU would probably be his first choice, but you folks wouldn't even be in the running. Other folks have big bucks and a future to offer. that's were smu loses out........no future there.

RE Doh: articulate anything after 4 years that clearly demonstrates improvement or progress in the SMU program.

SMU was 53% last year...and when SMU continues to build and gain nationally pub for its improving football team, that number will get smaller and smaller...
