Looking at the whole picture, the major difference between SMU and TCU, athletically, is that SMU received the Death Penalty which weakened our commitment to athletics over the last 25 years. TCU also received a severe NCAA penalty in the 1980s, but without the Death Penalty label and resulting stigma it was able to strengthen its commitment to athletics about 10 years ahead of SMU.
Didn't we also have an ongoing investigation at that time due to test taking regarding some of our recruits?
That would be the Malin scandal!

"Orsini said SMU tries to make itself as attractive as possible. "To me this is another tremor... but I still think there's a lot more out there. The big boys haven't really spoken yet in my opinion." Orsini reiterated that SMU has to be somewhat in a reactionary mode as it's other schools that are the "catalysts of change." http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com ... emors.html

To me, at least, that was complete vanilla, PR-friendly smiley-face AD speak. I wouldn't read into that at all, one way or another.

agreed. though, I did find it curious that he would say that SMU is in reactionary mode -- that seems more honest than what every other AD is saying about being aggressively proactive.

I wonder if he meant in the grand scheme of things...because obviously we're reactionary when the Cartel decides to make moves. If he was specifically referencing this go-around, it's probably still true but not necessarily a bad thing. Maybe we're reactionary to whether ESPN brokers this mystery deal? Or to whether or not BYU stays or goes? I guess on the surface it's nicer than Orsini using the interview to shove concept drawings in Kate's face of SMU's brand new Rocket Shuttle launch pad and mission control center which will cost 8.7 billion but we haven't raised any of it yet, ala Houston.

yeah, I don't think being reactionary is bad -- especially, if a lot of the chips are not in your hands.

Orsini is on all of it and works it hard because they all know you only get one shot. Orsini mentioned in a private gathering that if $$ is needed, that SMU has the backers poised to make it happen. The big guys make the plays and this one is not the big boys, and will be extremely fascinating to see how it plays out because this is the realignment that will count and positions the mid majors for years to come.
