Hawai'i ponders independence and assumes UT State and La Tech will leave WAC, as well.

Salt Lake Tribune - Wait on BYU Continues

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/cougars/50 ... s.html.csp
The MWC added Fresno State and Nevada of the WAC, thereby weakening that league to the point where BYU’s interest in it has waned considerably. A source acknowledged Wednesday talks between BYU and the WAC have been “infrequent” during the past two days.

Wednesday’s most telling development was delivered in a blog by Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News, who wrote that BYU officials have in recent days “reached out” to the West Coast Conference, a non-football-playing conference most known for having one of its members, Gonzaga, break into the college basketball elite.

The Cougars’ ideal plan, spelled out in a resolution with the WAC and obtained Tuesday by The Salt Lake Tribune, is to go independent in football and place its 18 other teams in the most viable league possible.

Barring a policy change, it cannot go independent in football and leave its other sports in the MWC, per MWC bylaws, which state members must compete in the league in four core sports, one of which is football.

Interesting piece in the SLC paper this morning about USU getting hosed in the BYU mess. Apparently, USU brokered the deal between BYU and the WAC as a favor to BYU. Now BYU is looking at staying put and USU's home in the WAC has been destroyed. Considering this, I would think the political pressure in Utah for BYU to clean up its USU poopy-mess would be very intense.

If that is true it is very indicative of how concerned TCU is with us being a future powerhouse. They obviously don't want our competition- especially in recruiting.

BYU wants to ally with USU in its war with Utah. BYU is looking real bad in the state compared with the Utes. So BYU wants to add USU, a third rate school with little or no academic or athletic achievements in a state with 2 million people in a marekt that the MWC still owns. No wonder TCU wants to block them. They add nothing, except they relieve political pressure on BYU and releaves their collective guilt at ruining a half dozen athletic programs still left in the WAC.

Way to go BYU! You set out to destory the MWC and you ended up destroying the WAC and your own sister school USU. Now, everyone in the Pac 10, MWC, and WAC hate you. You've crawled back to the MWC because you have no choice, but you get some face saving concessions in terms of TV dollars. You'll get to show your games on BYUTV - a station with such terrible programming that even mormans can't find it. Now you have no choice but to beg the Big 12 for a place in their conference, but you've lost your bargaining power with them, because now you have no alternatives. They've allready bought a tube of butt-lube and are bending over for Bevo. The Whorns like that kind of thing, just ask Baylor. The BYU trip to Fort Worth this year is going to be an epic blow out.

No doubt BYU hasn't made any friends over this. But the question still stands. What is the source of this latest rumor?

this is so fun........

another rumor from killerfrogs
I have a buddy that covers NCAA sports at a national level. He had an interview lined up this morning with a representative from The MTN Network. Just reporting what I've heard, but they canceled the interview because of an "emergency meeting" regarding BYU.

I wish I had more details, but I'll share as I hear them.

Under Comments:
"An emergency meeting to announce nothing? BYU never left, you don't have an emergency meeting to say nothing has changed. There's only two possibilities: the meeting is to announce BYU has left and will go WCC in all other sports, or BYU is staying so the announcement is to welcome Utah State into the conference. I'm sure the MWC would have preferred Houston, but TCU and BYU both pushed back at the idea, as BYU wants Utah State in the conference and TCU doesn't want another Texas school. Will be interesting to see though."

I doubt TCU wants UH. Everything I read has said TCU does not want Houston, including the comment referenced above.

At this point, I think if BYU decides to go, they won't announce it until the 11th hour when there is no time for the others to back fill as their parting shot. Remember this is the same crew that helped orchestrate the Denver Airport gutting of the WAC 16. That would leave the MWC with 10 teams for 2011 and extremely weakened with the WAC transferees. So, I would fully expect them to smile and negotiate nicely with the MWC and the TV networks and then bolt. If they stay, then part of the deal will be to add USU to salve that wound or they won't stay. Then they'll demand that the conference keep the Airport 4 together with Boise and USU in one division. Again, they won't decide either way until 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 31, just to keep the other schools in suspense.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

from the MWC board.......

"According to Tony Jones of the SLC Tribune, during an on air interview with 1280, says that his sources are telling him that USU will have a strong chance be invited as the 12th team to the MWC if BYU is willing to make a long term commitment to the conference. If BYU does not make a long term commitment then USU's chances are greatly reduced.
I just don't see how the Presidents of the MWC would vote for this conspirator to be invited regardless of what BYU does. "
