BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

Why do you hate couch people? "I think Couchem is right."
-EVERYONE
Re: Ole Miss Grad Said We stole all Our lingo and EmblemsI don't - do you?
How can I be a "racist" when I married a woman of Mexican ancestry from E. LA & have one child? Weak argument my friend. That's what I find interesting about liberals & the bunch, they never can defend their argument so they pull the old race card out & start the name calling. Time to grow up & move on with life. There is too much to live for. BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

Re: Ole Miss Grad Said We stole all Our lingo and EmblemsThe liberal comment is hilarious -- especially since you have no knowledge of any of our political beliefs -- he's baiting you and you're just chomping down on it.

Re: Ole Miss Grad Said We stole all Our lingo and EmblemsI thought this would be a fun football debating topic. But no as usual it goes to race. Now most know that I'm black and co-worker is really a good guy just proud of his alma mater. Let's show some class not show your A_ _!
Re: Ole Miss Grad Said We stole all Our lingo and EmblemsNot really b/c it's a truth. You guys need to lighten up with all the race bating in this thread. It's time to move onward & upward - not live in the past.

Just messing with you man! I thought responding to your original post with "racist!" was clearly facetious! "I think Couchem is right."

Re: Ole Miss Grad Said We stole all Our lingo and EmblemsOk, I'm back. I know I said I was out, but you know how the internet works, I had to come back and see what other people were saying. I've got a lot to say, so this might get long. Also I like to hear myself talk (type?). I fully recognize that SMU is a fantastic school. In fact, when we were jawing back and forth in the office about this, I specifically remember saying that at least SMU could say that they had better academics than us, but I digress.
Some good natured ribbing between a co-worker and I turned into something nasty on the internet (that's not supposed to be a dirty joke...really). I knew that it would eventually come to this, and it would [deleted] me right off so I should have stayed away from posting to begin with. You see, there's a lot of stuff you have to put up with if you go to Ole Miss. From the lack of on the field production from about 1972-2003...then again from 2003-2008, to the lack of respect from national media even when you do have a good team because apparently, the media doesn't like getting burned by picking you high and then watching your team implode before the midpoint of the season like we fans do (they get us every time). But the thing that we get most, the thing that really sets us off, is the racist stuff. We at Ole Miss had our problems...in the 1960's. It is not the 1960's anymore. It is 2010 and I'm sure that you would find that if you went to the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford it would be much like any other university in America. Oxford, MS is by far one of the most open, inviting, beautiful and progressive cities in the south. But the stereotype still abounds outside of the State of Mississippi and, inevitably, it rears its ugly head in any discussion, ill-natured or not, about Ole Miss. What pisses us off the most is that we know how hard we have worked in the past 40 years to right the wrongs and change people's perceptions of Ole Miss and it apparently hasn't worked. We have two bronze statues at Ole Miss. One of Coach Johnny Vaught (God rest his soul) and one of James Meredith, the first African American student at Ole Miss. We have been trying to remove the old south imagery from our school for a long time and we've had to bring a sometimes reluctant older fan base along with us, but we've worked very hard at it. The pictures posted above about the klan members coming to our school are real photos, but they don't tell the whole story. Generally the klan protests something that they do not like. Ergo, if the klan doesn't like what you are doing, whatever you are doing must be a good idea. We were trying to remove another piece of old south imagery that many perceived to be racist and the klan didn't like it one bit. I was at that game. What appeared on those steps that day was a group of no more than 10, mostly young and mostly scared out of their mind, idiots. There were no less than 200 in the crowd heckling, booing and cursing them for all they were worth. They stood for a few minutes and then left. The rest of us went on about our day, drank in the Grove and played a football game. They intimidated no one on campus that day because we made it clear that we would not tolerate their kind of backwards, evil thinking. They were allowed to be there because this is America and even idiots have the right to peaceably assemble on public property, which the university campus is. I think the real story here, and a testament to how far the state of Mississippi has come in the past 50 years, is that from the entire state of Mississippi they could only find 10 morons that would actually show up. You could probably go to Ohio or California and find more than 10, yet the stereotype of the racist Mississippian abounds. I had a friend who went to NYC a few summers ago and he told us a story about how he got into a cab in Manhattan and, after a few minutes conversing with the cabbie, let slip that he was from Mississippi. He told us that the cabbie then proceeded to drop N-bombs like it was going out of style. My friend asked him what made him think that it was ok to use that kind of language around him and the cabbie looked right in his face and said, "You're from Mississippi, I thought you guys hated them too?" That's the kind of crap we have to put up with EVERY DAY. So you can see why we might be a little sensitive about it. I've gone on way to long, but I didn't mean any offense by my first post and, as you can see, you guys pushed just the right button to elicit my second post. So, here's my third post take it for what you will. Adios. ETA: Better? Last edited by Rebel1 on Sun Aug 29, 2010 5:23 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Re: Ole Miss Grad Said We stole all Our lingo and Emblems
Easy there Hammer, this is a smack thread on an internet message board. You knew that (or reasonably should have known that) when you posted in here. I wouldn't equate people using the obvious attacks against Mississippi, to people actually thinking that the Klan has a tailgate event or is a regular contributor to life at Ole Miss. You gotta relax man. -CoS
Re: Ole Miss Grad Said We stole all Our lingo and EmblemsReb - thanks for the post. We should have kept it to football. Come to the BLVD on game day and you will see the friendlier side of us.

doesn't care who wins. -- Dwight D. Eisenhower
Re: Ole Miss Grad Said We stole all Our lingo and EmblemsOle Miss is Ole Miss and SMU is SMU. Two different schools, two different histories, and who knows maybe you'll have the Haley Barbour Presidential Library there some day. Until then SMU 1, Ole Miss 0.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Ole Miss Grad Said We stole all Our lingo and Emblems
True, but that was a forfeit, nobody else wanted that library. I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
