Texas Tech notes

Postby PonyPride » Sat Aug 28, 2010 10:20 pm

Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said this week he expects three players back after missing practice time for various ailments:
• Wide receiver Austin Zouzalik (appendectomy)
• Offensive lineman Mickey Okafor (concussion)
• Wide receiver Alex Torres (sore back)

Tech's starting offensive line is expected to look like this:
• LT LaAdrian Waddle — 6-6, 322
• LG Lonnie Edwards — 6-4, 322
• C Justin Keown — 6-4, 300
• RG Deveric Gallington — 6-3, 314
• RT Chris Olson (Highland Park HS) — 6-5, 300
Still big, but nowhere near the behemoths Mike Leach rolled out there in years past.

Tuberville also said on some Lubbock radio show (reportedly — I certainly didn't hear it) that the Red Raiders will run the ball 40-50 percent of the time. New TT offensive coordinator Neal Brown came to the Red Raiders from Troy.

Obviously personnel dictates a lot of what plays are called, so take this for what it's worth, but under Brown, the Troy offense ran the ball on 45.6 percent of its offensive plays in 2009.

Tech has a bunch of 4-star RBs (Batch, Stephens, Jeffers) plus a freshman RB, Ben McRoy, who may be the fastest player in the B12 (just won the Florida H.S. state 200m championship) and will not redshirt. Tubs loves what McRoy brings to the table. Since our best players are RBs you sould expect to see them get the ball a lot.

Let's see...

Taylor Thompson at 6-6 285 against 6-5 HP kid.
Marquis Frazier at 6-3 300 against their 6-4 300 center
Margus Hunt at 6-8 285 against their 6-6 322 left tackle

Looks good on paper at any rate.

Good stuff, all, including KillBilly — welcome to PonyFans.com.

Let's post a lot of Tech information this week. Being in "that other conference," and considering I never read the Big 12 Morning News, I don't know a lot about them. Anything relevant anyone can find would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a good Tech preview posted on YouTube. It should tell all you need to know about Tech.

Batch is still there? Seems like he's been there forever.
Really wish he had graduated — that guy can really run, and he's an excellent receiver.

Mike Leach said recently on CBS Sports that talent wise he felt Tech has more talent than at anytime in the last 10 years.

Batch messed up his ankle so badly a few years ago that there was a question about him ever walking normally again, much less playing D1 football. He underwent many surgeries to fix the ankle so perhaps he received a medical redshirt at some point. He is a special RB and a solid person for sure to fight through all tha adversity.

Leach praises the current talent at Tech but most of us considered Tech a potentially dominant 2010 team based on Potts meeting the expectations of his blue-chip pedigree. Things may click for Potts this year making Tech a very good team but we are a bit thin at OL and CB and will rely on some young players at those positions. Basically, a lot will have to go right for Tech to live up to Leach's expectations.

We are bigger on the Dline this year but still lack depth at each position. It is strange that TTU would have depth issues at Oline. I would have expected Leach to have that area well covered in his recruiting classes.

Of course Leach will praise the talent. He certainly does not want Tuberville to get credit if he does well and he wants maximum criticism if he does poorly.
