Coaching (Dement) - D (2 wins Tech/Purdue)
Lineburg - B+

Hopkins - B+ (MVP) - without Hop, this team would totally stink
Simpson - C+ (nice last few games)
Castro - C (he's gotten worse since last year - missed 45 layups)
Lowe - B- (rebounds)
Atkins - F - can't dribble + TO's
Pearson - B (didn't get enough minutes)
Bennett - D
Miller - B-
Rack - D (haven't seen anything yet worthwhile - too timid)
Isham - C (see previous post) - potential but never plays up to it

(5-13) is really awful, Best game was Purdue, Worst game was Rice or Boise State?

Certainly would have been more interesting if Dement got canned after the 40 pt Rice loss.

Like previous posters, the new coach better be able to get a big man somehow in CUSA.

See you guys next year with a new coach!

It takes more than coaching

Talent is part of the problem too at SMU. That might be harder to fix than getting a better coach.

Kids just do not seem to improve over the course of their career here. They come to us as anchors of successful programs and never really develop. I don't know why that is. Hopefully that will change with some new blood in the coaching ranks.

I'd give Bennett a C. He was passable and a freshman. Castro got worse when we hit the conference, he looked much better earlier in the season, but just got hammered in conference and by OSU. The problem is that he is not a center. Maybe Reay will bulk up and take some of the load off him next year. I don't see Rack as anything more than a tall small forward. He has a nice touch from 15 feet or so in, but he has no strength when bodies start flying around. Simpson was disappointing this year. I really expected him to be a star this year at the 4 position. He played better early on and then later on, but was either not strong enough (or tough enough) underneath to really make teams not go after him. I hope the new coach really helps these guys toughen up. We know what horses we have, and we don't have a 6-11 300 lb. moose underneath. So we'll have to make due with what we have.
