But when the team runs out onto the field, the band needs to play the fight song.
Yeah, agreed.

Just so we're clear - I'm all for tradition.. I was a Peruna Handler was very involved while an undergrad and I love SMU. The problem is.. the traditions we have either aren't taken seriously or didn't take with more recent grads. We haven't won in so long.. no one care about our traditions. I'm not saying replace them.. I'm saying stop with the playing of "Mission Impossible" and other tired songs over the PA.. and get something that brings outsiders into the mix. Those outsiders include Dallas and our grads since the 90's.. which I am.
I would NEVER replace the football team running in with "Peruna" blaring from the Mustang Band. Never replace that.. it still gives me chills ..and watching Peruna run across the field is one of the reasons I wanted to go to SMU when I was 8 years old.
But seriously.. what else do we have to psych up the crowd? Anything? Don't Stop Bo-Levi? I mean.. can we not do better than that on the production side of things? Hello Meadows?
Most alums 38 and younger wouldn't know the words to Varsity if it wasn't on a Jumbotron. No one knows the words to one of the greatest songs our band plays "Shanty Town". Even in the 80's - when we were playing in Texas Stadium.. the only words the crowd knew to "Pony Battle Battle Cry" was the part when they said.. "Fight, Fight, Fight". Our recent grads might remember the song.. but they're like everyone else on the west side of Ford Stadium once they graduate.. they become silent on that side of the stands.. with some exceptions.
There's nothing wrong with "new tradition" especially when you're a program on the rise that has not won in 20 years.. and when kids don't know what traditions SMU even has to begin with. They don't care
All I'm trying to do is be creative.. I'm fine with people telling me it's a bad idea or they don't like it. But those of you who think I'm trying to replace something.. you're wrong.
SMU has an opportunity to capture the audience that's walking into Ford Stadium to watch winning football. If we can embrace traditions, which our crowd never has... or have a cool production, which seems to be more likely.. they might come back when we're not winning again one day.
What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.

I've thought about this kinda for a while now. I think it would be cool if there was some sort of intro video that highlighted some of our past great players: Dandy Don, Doak, Lamar, James, Dickerson, Sanders, etc. Put their highlights into a package and then show footage of the current team. Pair it with music and I think it gets the stadium pumped.

I agree that our entrance is incredibly pathetic. Instead of pumping everyone up, it leaves everyone saying, "really?" We need something intense. Start with a video that shows the great moments of SMU football. Why not even show that video they just came out with? Near the end of a video, smoke coming out of the tunnel would be awesome. Maybe add some fireworks that explode on the grassy knoll or above the press box. Anything but what we have right now..I know most of you hate Texas but they do a great job with the entrance. Here's a clip: (notice the smoke, fireworks, and fire exploding when they come out) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QvwLhVuAPY

If we could hire the Auto-Tune The News/"Double Rainbow" internet brothers to mash up something catchy/impactful for an opening HD board sequence, then I'm interested.

1)video/music 2)shoot flames straight up from each side of the new score board that are so large you feel the heat in the stands 3)fog machine that fogs entire field 4)players run onto field 5)shoot a cannon at kickoff that is so loud all the windows break - opening up the stadium club as it should be

Funny, my wife(who is also an MB'er from that era) and I had a conversation about when the band first started doing the chant and how much she dislikes it. I told her that it is one of the few things about Mustang Band that I thought was completely out of place. Glad to know that I wasn't the only one.

Obviously, many bandsmen/women from that lean era think alike, and have an interesting perspective on traditions.
