I really can't stand the whole icing the kicker literally a split second before they hike the ball. Watching the Utah-Pitt game now, Pitt down by 3, with 3 seconds left on the clock.
Pitt kicker makes first kick, but they find out Utah called TO.
Pitt kicker misses second kick. Genius right? Uh, no. Utah coach called TO again.
Pitt kicker makes third kick, and Utah coach decided not to do it again. So they go to OT.
I really hope this comes back to bite Utah in the arse. Really overthinking something that is complete friggin' guesswork.

Believe we tried to ice Memphis' kicker in 2007 in that OT game played at the Liberty Bowl. Problem was he missed the kick we called timeout before, then came out and made the next one.

In proper icing, one calls the timeout before the kicker is able to kick the ball. Improper timing simply provides the opportunity for the kicker to practice.
The 2007 Memphis game was not as much an instance in which icing backfired as it was Bennett failure to understand how it is to be executed.
