Beasley Quick Screen Play

How many times did they run this quick screen play and waste a down @ Tech? Seems that Padron kept either throwing a horrid pass or Beasley totally missed it (often becasue there was a Tech player barreling down on him and I am sure he heard the footsteps).

This is supposed to be a run and shoot 1st down replacement for the 3 yard run - but it seems to me that handing the ball to Line/Fields/Butler would produce a better result on 1st down.

Of course I saw this play all the time with the Hawaii Warriors and the 2 yard qick screen could turn into a 30 yard play with the right downfield blocking.

Is this a early season timing issue or Tech's D was just well positioned for this play. I am sure we will see many more of these on Saturday.

I don't mind this play call and I do like Beasley a lot. Just think someone like Darius should be getting these throws. With his catching ability and elusiveness he could have gained some big yards. Wish we could get that guy some running room, his high school highlight films are filled with 5 yard catches and and 50+ TD runs...

It appeared to me that JJ for some reason was not ready for what TT threw at him especially early on and the receivers could do little with what they had do work with. Press coverage should have been addressed in practice in preparation and maybe it was or maybe we just couldn't do much about it, but I find that scenerio highly unlikely.

I agree about Darius Johnson. Would love to see him even more involved. Ever since his first TD at SMU (diving into the end zone in I believe game 1 last year) I have been hopeful that this would be his breakout year at SMU.

He woudl be great on those quick hits.

I didn't dvr the game, but from what i remember it seemed as though Padron was trying to lead beasley forward and get him some forward momentum, but beasley was out of position, i don't remember what game I was watching, but when they ran a similar play and lead the receiver it gave that wr a huge advantage vs just throwing it at a stand still

I question why even pass when Line and Butler are averaging 6 yards a carry? Early they would run for 6 or 7 yards on first down and then we would throw 2 incompletions and punt putting our d back in the game. Sometimes a coach has to swallow his pride and take what the defense gives you. I think they were surprised at not being physically overmatched like the last game in Lubbock and didn't react well to a flustered TT defense till late in the half. Do you think the SMU coaches knew that Leuong (tech wr) was a 5A state champion high jumper with jumps over 7 foot? Didn't look like it puttng a much smaller cb and playing off. They are gonna win a bunch of games this year! They have the players.

the screen is a good play and the only reason the runs were working is due to tt focusing on the quick passes, if we started running the ball more on first downs they would change their focus to the run. There is nothing really a cb can do to cover a wr on those fade plays when the ball is places as well as it was on those plays.

The reason the run works is because it is used sparingly in a passing offense. You go to the run too much in this offense and you no only will get stuffed but the big gainers will disappear

They will work on Padron's feet and hips to fix the deep ball issue.

AR absolutely beat the DB on a play down the far sideline (when watching on tv) and Padron's underthrow was intercepted. He puts that one ahead of AR to let him run to it and it was easy TD SMU.

Seems the west texas wind could have been an issue too. Padron has never played in that type of wind (or atmosphere). But if our kicker said he could kick it 40 yards one way and 60 yards the other, that would have to mess with Kyle too. I think that is why he under threw AR on one of those open ones.

You are right - did not think of that. That pass WAS into the wind.

that is true, in fact one of his crossing routes to the slot was a duck because of wind due to the lack of velocity on the ball. ball speed was fine, not enough velocity. On that note, watch Padron's lower body motion (hip-knee-foot position) during the throw in that game; he has some great tools. Morrison has tried to take that area of his game to the next level, and did before the bowl game. Padron was inconsistent in his setup at times and that largely affected his accuracy/ball placement.
