Re: State FairI still say an annual Halloween game (Saturday before Halloween) with costumes and trick-or-treating on The BOOlevard is the best marketing gimmick we're passing up.
Football, tailgating, candy for the kids, and college girls in skimpy Halloween costumes. What's not to like?
Re: State FairIf 20,000 can't walk 2 blocks to the game at Ford, I doubt they would head to Fair Park
Re: State FairThe only thing that could possibly improve with Fair Park is if they brought back the fraternity buses to the games with kegs on board. It would make sure the students went to the game and they could not leave early. But I seriously doubt they could do that anymore like they did in my day. And let me repeat what others have said because I was there. It is miserable to play a game in a 72,000 seat stadium with 10,000 people.
We need to find ways to fill Ford. Winning is one but it is going to take a little more to get the people of Dallas to support our team. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: State FairI will play a game in a 72,000 seat stadium when we can fill it and not before.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Re: State FairI don't think bus or anybody was suggesting it as a venue to play Rice or as a regular occurence. The idea is to bring in a profile team that wouldn't otherwise be willing to play at little Ford Stadium: Notre Dame, Arkansas, LSU, or Nebraska now that they are going to lose their Texas/southern exposure. Approaching Nebraska would be a hell of an idea for a creative AD right now. I suppose you guys think TCU made a huge mistake by playing at Jerry World this year. Yeah right. Losing a a game at the Boo-levard aint gonna hurt anything. Playing at the Cotton Bowl during the fair against a marquee opponent would be a heck of alot better than the made for CSTV 2:30 kickoff extravaganza against Wazzu is going to be tomorrow where half our diehard fans are gonna be sitting in the Hall of Champions for the air conditioning.
Re: State FairA high profile opponent at the Cotton Bowl would accomplish just what it did in the past. A home game out numbered by the opposition. When you are on the field it is very depressing. If there was some way to do it as RGV suggested and have it as an away game that would be ok. Then we do not sacrifice a home game with a pro but small SMU crowd.
Problem with that is that when a team travels to be a home team it is usually to enhance their attendance stats such as a small out of state school did (I do not recall who) when they traveled to Little Rock to play Arkansas but the out of state team was the home team so they could meet the attendance requirements necessary for the NCAA guidelines. If we HAD to play in the Cotton Bowl for a game that was an SMU home game I would rather it be against someone we could easily beat and then use a Mustang Mania type of give away promotion to get people in the stands. Don't bring in Arkansas with 65,000 UA fans to drown out our alma mater as they did the last time and then beat us like a drum in our stadium. And our fans sitting in the air conditioning is our own fault for offering. If we were playing a high profile opponent in the Cotton Bowl tomorrow I would imagine our people would have the same promotion only TV would be the only viewing option. Why we are pulling fans from the stands completely baffles me. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: State Fairi know the arkansas game you are referring to, that particular night was painful but that was because we sucked and there was no enthusiasm before or during the game. there were other arkansas games (post SWC mind you) that were much more fun and their crowd didnt intimidate anyone because we WERE competitive: Cotton Bowl 1994, Shreveport etc. Yeah, I don't recommend scheduling Arkansas or Nebraska at the Cotton if you are resigned to fielding a bad team. I thought we had more hope than that with JJ right now though. You have to have a good team and expectations, and then take on the big boys and their crowds. If we can never do it, we might as well go D2 right now.
We have more of a Rice attitude than a Boise St/TCU attitude right now, and thats a recipe for going nowhere. Check that, even Rice played a profile 'home' game at Reliant Stadium this year. Doubt they regret scheduling UT.
Re: State Fair
was that when we rolled out the New York Jets-styled red unis?
Re: State FairThe problem is that good team or bad team, SMU has never drawn well since the Doak Walker era. If you will go to the attendance records during our pony express hey days, the only times we had that would be considered great crowds (near or at sellout) in Texas Stadium, was when we played Texas, Arkansas, or A&M. And in all of those cases we were out numbered in fans. Other than those opponents, our attendance was, I believe under 30,000 a game.
No matter how good we are now or in the future from an attendance stand point we will not draw large crowds of fans until something drastically changes. I have hopes that this era may be that drastic change. Jones has a system that is geared towards excitement and if promoted properly (but we have no marketing department) we may be able to finally tap into the Dallas area population to help grow the fan base. When we can sell out Ford on a regular basis, and talk is serious about expanding the stadium size, I will be the first in line to promote a game at a larger stadium such as the Cotton Bowl, Jerry World, etc. But for now I just do not want to be out numbered at a home game and hear echos on top of that. We are probably going to be close to outnumbered next Friday. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: State Fairi think so. another reason our fans were beaten down from the get-go that night.
Re: State Fair
its not all bad to have opposing fans in the stands. We will be outnumbered next Friday. We were outnumbered in 2005 against TCU. Didnt feel like it though once we started winning. Ended up being one of the most fun SMU games in the last 25 years easily. If you get your [deleted] kicked, yeah its gonna suck. Call it high risk with a high reward though once a year or every couple years. Honestly, where is one more game against Sam Houston State or UNT at Ford gonna get us? NOWHERE.
Re: State FairI think there is a lot of in between from Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl and Sam Houston State in Ford. I like Baylor, TCU, Navy, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, even Arkansas if they would come to Ford. I just do not think it is time to start playing at big venues yet when we do not even have local fan support. Being out numbered 20,000 to 18,000 like we will probbly be on Friday is not nearly the same at 55,000 to 15,000.
I am in total agreement with you when we can start filling our own stadium, but let start there. We have a lot to offer with the boulevard, kid friendly, family atmosphere. All the things needed to try and lure in some local support. Again when we can make progress towards establishing a fan base of our own then lets bring in the big guys and play them where is necessary to hold the crowd. I do want to go on record that I do not prefer the UNT, SHS, SFA, etc. games. I want to play top competition. But for now I want to play at Ford until we get our fan base and our team from a depth and winning perspective in place. And at Ford we will probably not be able to get Notre Dame but I bet we could get BYU. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: State FairIf JJ can take this program to top 25 level and TCU remains strong, it might just be possible to play the frogs during the State Fair; with enough advertising and discounted tickets (here's where we appeal to school age kids and their families), we might draw a pretty strong crowd.
I seem to recall playing TCU at the Cotton Bowl during the Fair before
Re: State Fairwell, we've got a six year bender set with UNT. I don't mind playing UNT in a two game set every 10 years or so, but 6 times in the next decade? are we trying to establish them as a rival? rather take my chances in front of 50000 corn farmers or hogs at the house that doak built for at least 2 of those 6 future UNT dates.
