It was sent as a gift from his son in Hawai'i on his birthday (the son's). It is something they have done in their family for years. I'm sure his son (watching on TV) appreciated his dad wearing it. I think they look good - better than a string tie.

JJ marches to the beat of a different drummer...he's not EVER gonna conform to
the way you want him to be....leave him be...he doesn't like socks...he sometimes
wears a lei because he obviously loves Hawaii...Cavan and Bennett both wore socks
and didn't wear a lei...JJ is who is...he turns football programs into winners..we are
lucky to have him...appreciate these days....one day he will be gone....so dont whine
about every little thing....sit back and enjoy the ride....so far it's been pretty good.

We all have to admit JJ has some quirks...liike wearing leis', but he also wears black shirts on the sideline ( yes so KP can find him on the sideline, but he could wear another color or hat etc) to every game even when its 105 degrees on the field and he also wears full sweatshirts and sweat pants ( sometimes black ones) during during the hot Texas summer practices also. Those two JJ quirks are dangerous and downright uncomfortable.

Just kidding...wearing black in the heat can raise your body temp profusely and at his age.......Maybe JJ blows up in a spontaneous combustion accident.

Again, why do you care? I'm with everyone else that says he can wear whatever the hell he wants as long as he has our program on the right track.

Guess I'd like to see some sign he feels at home in Dallas and is a Mustang - not just a hawaii loving temporary hired gun. Not the biggest deal in the world - and Im happy with wins of course - but im just tired of hearing about Hawaii - enough already. However if the choice is hawaii vs a texan coach that loses - then bring on the Don Ho.

See there are a couple things going on here, JJ is loyal... and superstitious.

First of all if you come all the way from the islands to Dallas to support your friend and bring a fresh lei with you, JJ is the kind of guy who will wear it to show you the appreciation of bringing him a lei all this way.

Also, I'm sure he's won a lot more games than he has lost while wearing a lei. Thus wearing the lei = good. (Even though we lost to Navy when he wore one last year.)

...

Maybe it's just me, but I think it's cool. JJ is just a different kind of football coach.... now if Wade Phillips ever came out wearing a lei... Actually at 0-2 Wade might want to try all the mojo he can get.

I agree. I have never heard a better rendition.

Hawaii connection was in town at JJ's invitation. Saw Willie K in the Barnes and Noble book store before the game buying up SMU gear. Everson Walls was also there signing copies of his new book.
