DMN: Mustangs' success isn't reflected in the stands

TCU will bring their people

Postby Sam I Am » Sun Sep 19, 2010 11:44 pm

The embarassing thing on Friday night will be having more TCU fans in the stands than SMU. There may be a full stadium and that will help financially. The rivalry and ranking will help sell tickets. I only wish the Pony fans were the ones standing in line to win this game.

A+
Genius

And why was that the headline??

Actually, 18K for a blazing hot home game on TV, the middle of a 3 game home stand with no travelling fan support... is moving in the right direction.

I went out at the half to check on 33. People on the blvd were few.
Less than 150.

I try to fill my 4 seats every week. Bring a friend.

All games in September should be at 7:00.

A joke: That the DMN writer failed to mention the heat factor. The stadium was packed everywhere there was shade and air conditioning. Had it been a night game, we might have had as many as 5,000 extra fans.

A bigger joke: Calling CBS-C "national television." If it ain't ESPN or one of the big four networks, no one's watching.

TCU kicked off an hour later than us (to be on Versus - oh boy!) and had a packed house. But A) They're a Top 5 program, B)They played Baylor, and C) It was Parents Weekend. And half their crowd left at halftime because of the heat.

Our game looked terrible on television because no one sat on the sunny side, which was where the TV cameras were pointed. CBS-C couldn't have been happy with that, but it was their decision to air a mid-September game in Texas at 2:30 p.m. Diminishing returns, fellas.

Someone's going to die at one of these September afternoon TV games. It will happen.

It's Parent's Weekend this weekend, I think there will be a lot more SMU fans there than you think.

The low hanging fruit to increase our attendance is to fix ticket booth problems. It is great that we now have a ticket booth on the Boulevard but we have major problems distributing tickets. We have the potential for 100's or 1000's of tickets to be sold from those that attend the tailgating. Most people don't want to wait an entire quarter in line to purchase tickets so they just leave. Additionally, we need to find a better way to funnel students into the game. If more than 1000 students actually came to a game they would be waiting in a line outside of gate 6.

Fixing ticket booth problems is not the ultimate fix to our attendance problems but it must be addressed or we will never fill the stands!

Traditionally that is good for the malls and the restaurants but bad for the student section.

Haha I would agree with you in the past, but I feel like the students/parents/everyone will be out in full force for this game.

I hate when people say that visiting teams out draw us. Agreed it is ridiculous that it's even close, but the closest I've ever seen is 60-40 SMU fans. Like the TV cameras, most fans sit on the west side and look at the visitors section where it is probably 70-80% visitors for a big draw opponent. Try walking around to the east side and look back west, I have and it's 90%+ SMU fans. End zone is 60-40 visitors typically and then add a thousand or more SMU students and we are not being out drawn.

Part of the perception of larger visiting crowds is that our fans like to wear every color of the rainbow except red or blue. Don't mistake douchery and wearing pastel polos for us being out drawn at our own stadium.

Also, to make this point moot moving forward, send an email to 10 non SMU people today and invite them to Friday's game and any of the remaining home games. I did this last Monday, admittedly I heard crickets, but on Friday night I got an email from one of the guys who brought his significant other. They loved the boulevard networked a little and will now be coming to SMU games when their big state school is not at home.

Yeah it's two measly people, but if 2,000, 1,000, or even 500 of our core base does this, we start to see real improvement in attendance.
