against TCU's Defense our offense:the choice/option routes for the slots will be open, they will bait the intermediate routes.
the big slots will be effective as possession receivers, the scats will get limited YAC. the ability of holman and AR to get vertical will open the middle further. we will likely see the stop fade because of their speed on D. bubble screens will only be effective if executed perfectly. the running game will remain basic; tampa left, right, etc.- we may see the stretch with Fields. we will see the shovel pass when TCU's d pins their ears back. if TCU calls delayed blitzes, the running backs need to step up and make plays. KP is practicing sprint outs, half and 1/4 roll outs. KP needs to get his footwork back to remedy his ball speed issues. Subtle changes in the OL protection scheme and pocket depth/shape will be seen. Your thoughts? ![]() ![]() ![]()
Re: against TCU's Defense our offense:Its all going to be about how our offensive line protects Kyle and his ability to make the right read QUICKLY. They will destroy us if we cannot give Kyle time to throw the ball which will lead to more bumping and jamming of our tiny slot receivers. If I'm SMU, I play a conservative game plan. Short, quick passes combined with a heavy dose of screens and shovel passes. Use their aggressive style against them. Then, when the opportunity presents itself, take a shot or two.
Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: against TCU's Defense our offense:I'm not sure we are going to blitz very much. Seems like our preference against spreads, run and shoots, etc. is to come with the 4 man rush - maybe 5 - and make teams move the ball in small chunks. This was effective against Baylor and Ore State - we blitzed very rarely. I expect to see a similar gameplan on Friday night.
Re: against TCU's Defense our offense:Probably won't have to blitz much Reed. I think we'll know a lot about how SMU can hold up by the first series or two. If we are getting overwhelmed up front its going to be an awfully long day. If indeed TCU only rushes four and we give Kyle time then we have to make TCU pay.
Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: against TCU's Defense our offense:
Just a comment (this is not a criticism). Few things get June Jones riled up like calling his offense the spread or suggesting his offense is a form of the spread. I heard your play by play guy make that mistake in an interview on 103.3 once and the result was...amusing. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Re: against TCU's Defense our offense:
O-line concerns me. JJ said in an interview that some of the o-line are dinged.
Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Re: against TCU's Defense our offense:
Hate the stretch. Hate it, hate it, hate it. What the Colts run is similar to our R&S; I hear stretch and I see Addai or Brown or Hart or Edge before that getting blown up off tackle.
Re: against TCU's Defense our offense:
We have got to keep KP upright. While a majority of this rests on the O-line blocking, KP has got to make quicker decisions and get rid of the ball quickly. DJ and Cole have got to be ready on those hot routes, and KP must look to them early and often if we want to move the ball effectively. Re: against TCU's Defense our offense:
This is what I want to see early on to at least give the offense some confidence that they can move the ball. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: against TCU's Defense our offense:the key to our offense will be our ability to run the ball. Kyle still has not hit his stride and it will be important for Line, Butler and Fields to generate positive yardage in the run game.

Re: against TCU's Defense our offense:i would not be surprised if we ran 80% run for the first several drives...assuming they are drives...
but then again - they will expect us to come out timid - so knowing JJ he will air it out early.
Re: against TCU's Defense our offense:I think TCU pretty much shuts SMU's offense down exposing the lack of a speed running back, inability of our inside receivers to get off the line, the lack of Padron's present ability to make reads and the inability of SMU receivers to get depth except Robinson. I think right now SMU's offense ain't that hard to stop with quality defenders and Patterson will shut down our few quality playmakers on offense. I think Padron is going to be running for his life if he doesn't make quick reads. I expect 5-6 sacks.

Re: against TCU's Defense our offense:If stallion is right it kind of makes you think jj will find some way to get fields more touches. Of tcu brings the heat hard off the ends , the way to counter that is let them run themselves out of the play and run your fastest back right past them.
