Padron concern

I love that Padron has shown the ability to scramble and allude the rush but he is gonna have to start protecting the ball better. He scares the hell outta me when he gets outside the pocket. I'm sure Patterson has seen this watching film and will have his defensive, which is very good at stripping the ball, trying to at every opportunity.

Nah, he hasnt lost the ball much,....most hits on a qb are blindside so think about it. You get bumped in the back at a bbq with some food on your plate...not able to brace yourself and drop your hot dog. You arent able to prepare for something you dont know is coming. He should be fine, he's a tough kid. You forget he's young guys...total of 16 games played as a qb

Yes, but when Padron scrambles he doesn't hold the ball very tight to his body. Sometimes it even looks like he's palming it on his runs. I will concede, his field vision gives him an idea of where the defenders are so he can run this way. But a faster defense like TCU could sneak up on him and cause some easy fumbles.

His ball security reminds me of Michael Vick. IF he is going to tuck and run, he needs to slide to avoid getting rocked by the Tank (Carter)/fumbling. We HAVE to limit TOs. If we give TCU short fields (like TTU) we will get blown out.

Ah that is true...when i played qb i held the ball like a loaf of bread too. Its natural to do it because you want to have the option to still pass. I remember vick faking a pass 10 yards downfield and getting a defender to jump. But i do see you point and we cant give tcu a short field. We have to make it a football game...a true one. I got a good feeling about this one....i hope...lol

How he carries the ball in space, is exactly how MV7 used to. Trust me, I watched Vick for 5 years, and have watched every SMU game that Padron has played in.

They hold it that way ,because until they cross the line of scrimmage they have to be ready to throw the ball, or at least fake a pump so that the rusher freezes for a second. If the entire TCU team starts running toward him, a wide out might suddenly come open.

Padron won't be able to scramble against this defense the way he has the past couple of weeks. . .period. TCU's defensive ends and linebackers are extremely fast. They will run Padron down quickly, unlike the suspect defenses he's seen against UAB and Wazzou. Beside, scrambling is not what Padron is supposed to be doing much of anyway. If this thing is going to work on Friday then the receivers are going to have to get open quickly and Padron is going to have to get rid of the ball quickly and accurately. If he stands in the pocket staring down his receivers this week, he'll get killed. If he tries to do the Lance McIlhenny routine and make it happen as a running QB, he'll get killed.

Bottom line, if Padron is doing lots of scrambling this week, then the question of how well he holds onto the ball will be academic because it means we will be generating zero offense.

I should clarify that there is of course a difference between rolling out and scrambling. Designed roll-outs are fine. Scrambling to save one's butt against TCU's defense is a recipe for disaster. Ask Robert Griffin.
