Is This the Biggest SMU/TCU Game in Most of Our Lives?

Postby Stallion » Tue Sep 21, 2010 1:55 pm

SAD but TRUE unless you are about 75-80 years old
What has been missing from SMU v. TCU is two quality teams at the same time.
Check it out-it just has never happened. This year might just be it.
No. 4 TCU (12-1 in 2009 with BCS bid) v. SMU (8-5 in 2009 and first Bowl in 20 years).

I think the 1984 Game was gonna be a whopper until Jim Wacker(Don't Cheat) found out most of his players were on the payroll and suspended a bunch of players on the Monday before a nationally televised broadcast. SMU rolled by geez something like 52-Not Much.

Looking forward to this one-because it actually means something.

I agree this is huge for both teams. If TCU wins, it will probably be a quality win for them at season's end and help their RPI. If we win, it will be the upset of the Century. Even bigger perhaps than that little win we had over them a few years ago when they went 11-1 and we were the 1.

here's something maybe you can answer Stallion. I'm not sure if it was the year you mentioned, but at some point in the 80s, SMU-TCU was at the Cotton Bowl. Why wasnt it at Texas Stadium?

edit: 1986 is the year I'm talking about

yeah the last SMU TCU Game before the DP when Bobby Watters was QB was played in the Cotton Bowl right? I'm pretty sure it was just in conjunction with the State Fair.

It's the most anticipated one for me. Granted, I've only had season tickets for close to 10 years, but I cannot wait for Friday. We've got a chance to do it again, just like in '05.

There was something like 55K at that game at the cotton bowl if I remember correctly. Still this is most important game for me and I am pretty old. Of course, we had a 20 year win streak going when I was in school.

1986 was the game at the Cotton Bowl. 1984 there was 56 or 58,000 at Texas Stadium for a 26 to 17 SMU win. 1985 was the Wacker suspensions, SMU won 56 to 21.

I was at all those games. The thing I remember most was the one at the cotton bowl. I remember looking around at the half empty stadium wondering why I was there.

Yeah, but I was thinking, how big is it really? If you asked June if at the end of Friday's game that he could lose and have everybody healthy or win and lose 2 starters to injury, well... he wouldn't answer but I am sure getting out of this game healthy going into conference play is paramount in his mind. If that is true, how big can it really be?
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Correct Dooby. Last year the goal was the Hawaii Bowl. This year is the Conference Championship. It will remain the Championship until we improve enough to compete on a National level.

That said, an upset this weekend would be very big.

I also think that Jones cares a lot more about winning C-USA than he does about beating TCU or any out of conference team, being an outsider he just doesn't have a sense of the history of this rivalry and that's not a bad thing. He said that 1-3 was the mark he set for the first 4 games with UAB being the only game the team needed to win to keep pace with their goals, the TCU game was pretty much rendered irrelevant by those standards. While it would be a landmark win for SMU, they can accomplish everything they want to this season without beating TCU.

He has said a number of times, he now understands the magnitude of the game for the kids. His perspective is smart and takes a lot of the pressure off our players. Being able to embrace the rivalry but have fun with nothing to lose goes a long way I'm sure.

Getting past this game with no injuries is a win in and of itself. That being said, let's just knock the toads off on our way to the conf title game.

Wait, I haven't seen this mentioned. If we do beat TCU, do we crack the Top 25?
