Uniform Foul

Postby docabel » Sun Oct 17, 2010 9:13 am

With all the breast cancer awareness going on this month, we are seeing teams with pink on their uniforms (gloves, cleats, towels, etc.). Unfortunately, Rice yesterday took this to another level, actually altering their helmets. I'm all for awareness, but this is one step too far.

Yeah, don't complain if they throw the other teams off so much that you actually can beat a better team.

It looks cool...very creative. And guess what? ..just the fact that you noticed and posted it here makes it a good job! Awareness is key. My wife went through breast cancer and have had other family members and friends family members either die or go through holy hell because of this desease.

All the pink ribbon, facebook status, bumper sticker BS does more harm than good. It's armchair activism. "Raising awareness" doesn't really do much unless it is followed with real action. Unfortuantely, so many will put on some trendy "Save the Ta-Tas" Tshirt and think they are doing something, instead of actually doing something. As someone stated, it's the charity opiate of the masses.

awareness is awareness, action is what you can do once you know.

I wore a pink polo to class friday and have been wearing a wristband for my grandmother and aunt.

on a more important tangent, i have participated in one or more fundraising events every year for cancer research benefiting children to women since I was a freshman in high school.

I challenge everyone on the board to do the same, if you are not already.

I figure i'm gonna have to deal w/ some kind of cancer in my lifetime given that im a white-a** Irishman from Texas...would be nice to have something resembling a cure in 30-40 years or less.

Couchem I can usually agree with you on these boards, but you are WAY off here. More millions and millions of dollars have been raised from this Pink campaign ( and the derivatives)and Livestrong for Cancer research than ever before for Cancer and yes there are those who are armchair activitsts, but those types are always there. But there are millions of everyday people out there running and walking at the Komen Rally's, raising funds and rallying the troops and wearing pink is just part of the total campaign. It always about awareness first, then the pressure is put on for raising funds from the activists that aren't sitting in their armchairs.

45,000 women ran in The Race for the Cure in Little Rock this weekend and I can assure you a lot of money was raised.

Komen and LiveSTRONG are great organizations that are incredibly effective at raising money -- people being trendy and buying stuff that's pink isn't. I don't think Rice's version of what the NFL is doing is anywhere near as effective at "raising awareness." The NFL broadcasters actually do a spot for this purpose, right? Reaches a much larger audience and I'd venture to say more people type something into Google than during Rice's game (not by proportion, by sheer number). Rice doing this strikes me and trendy and gimmicky.

Pretty sure it was an NCAA thing just like an NFL thing. Lots of NCAA schools were doing something pink. I saw some of our guys with pink towels. At least I hope so for what I paid for my HD system.
