Classless Cavan???

Postby MrMustang1965 » Sat Nov 24, 2001 9:14 pm

Since I live in Houston, I had a chance to listen to the SMU v. Rice game on KBME-AM 790 (Houston). Just thought I'd pass along comments that were made by the broadcast team (headed by Tom Franklin, sports director of KTRH-AM 740) when SMU scored its final touchdown with just minutes remaining in the game. They referred to Cavan as 'classless' and 'this is just the kind of thing Cavan would do...run up ths score' when SMU made the game 37-20. They (the broadcast team) believe that SMU should have taken a knee or run out the clock instead of another Page to Cunningham touchdown. They were quite vocal about the 'poor officiating' against the Owls, too, throughout the entire game. I guess when you're a 'local' station for the visiting team that only stands to reason that you're going to find any excuse for that team losing the game. Anyhow, the broadcast team continued to be vocal about THIS is why SMU has been poor at recruiting under Mike Cavan...because he's a 'jerk' (direct quote from the broadcast) and 'classless' in winning games against stronger opponents like Rice. Just thought I'd pass these comments along to the SMU faithful. Personally, I'm pleased that Mike Cavan will no longer be at SMU. I've been calling for his termination since the beginning of the season. The broadcast team also called Chris Cunningham 'classless' as a result of his 'taunting' the Rice players after the final TD. Just thought the rest of you would like to know what was said in the Houston area...where recruiting may prove more difficult this spring as a result of this game. I remain a Mustang fan!!!

Running up the score! Do you listen to the plays being run or just what the announcers say. They did not pass, nor did they run any reverses on the last two drives. They ran basic plays inside the tackles. The OC even came down to the sidelines, so he wasn't even calling the plays.

You are a Rice wannabe. Cavan is gone, but he doesn't need any **** from jerks like you. Just thought you should know what some SMU people think of you up in Dallas. Me included.

Mr. Mustang, The real jerk in all of this is Shanderrick Charles. He shouldn't run so hard. He should just run into the line and fall down. Are you Mr. Mustang or Mr. Owl?

all I can say is: "payback is hell". Those Rice "homers" seem to have forgotten last year's lopsided score. Actually, this makes 3 yrs running where the home team in this series has been a BIG winner. This won't do anything but HELP our recruiting. It's all about winning. Anyone who might believe Cavan ran it up and wants to hold it against him will be pleased that he is leaving.

I've never really been much of a fan of Cavan's, but I disagree with the radio guys calling him classless. A dope maybe, and not fun to play for, but I'd never tab Cavan as classless.

But they're right on about Cunningham being a poor sport. That guy's always taunted the weak. I remember when we were thumping the mighty powerhouse that was Division I-AA Cal State Northridge, and Cunningham waved the ball in those guys' faces when he went in for a touchdown on a return.

I also heard the Rice broadcast, and I nearly dropped my beer when I heard those comments. Say what you want about Cavan's coaching ability under various situations, but he has never run up the score since his arrival at SMU. Some of us (myself included) have tired of his rhetoric after losses, when he says things about "going back to work, working hard, etc.," but as far as I can recall, he's never once accused an opposing coach of running up the score on SMU, and he never has run up the score on an opponent. Even when we whipped Cal State-Northridge a few years ago, he was extremely conservative in the late stages of the game, calling running plays between the tackles -- but CS-N couldn't contain Kris Briggs. The Rice announcers sounded as homer-istic as the Aggie broadcasters who constantly refer to the A&M team as "we" and needing to get to "our" 35 for a first down, etc. Rice should be ashamed to have these clowns as announcers. They are ignorant about football and as Charleston Pony pointed out, they clearly have forgotten last year's score. Cavan has lost with class and won with class. He hasn't won enough for our tastes, but he always represented the university with class.

Hey, Mickey! Please go back and read my comments in my original post...I was just passing on what the Houston 'Rice' announcers said! I, by no means, am a 'Rice wannabe'! I take offense to that statement...I suspect that my blood runs redder and bluer than yours anyday of the week! Please go back and read my comments with an 'open' eye. Also, go back and read my posts since the beginning of the season! Thanks! GO MUSTANGS! The 2002 season starts in one more week! GET READY!!!!!

I am basically repeating what everyone is saying here, but here we go.
Rice big time ran it up on us last year, and by no means is a 17 point victory a run up.

Cavan is a classy guy. In fact I think that is one of his weaknesses. His loyalty and classiness hurts him in coaching.

Cavan showed class and usually does. His class was seen by the victory today. He could have given up on the team and quit but he had the team and coaches prepared today and it showed with a win over a probable bowl bound Rice, which looks like that is ruined. Good job Coach! (I know that may be a little late)

Mr. Mustang,

I know you were just summarizing the Owl brodcaster statements. I didn't see you defend Cavan or our coaches. I also didn't see you mention the Rice broadcasters were wrong and totally off base.

You did mention that you wanted Cavan gone. You mentioned this hundreds of times this year. He is gone. Quit kicking the man when he is down!

Regarding Cunningham, I didn't see any taunting this game, so I have no comment. However, I have seen him do it in other games and this is not acceptable.

Bottom line is that Cavan tried. He didn't get it done in his five years, but he was never playing on a level field.

37 - 20 is not running up the score!!! Even a Mom knows that. Way to go
SMU and kudos to Coach Caven who has shown tons of class the way he has not stopped coaching even though he is out as SMU football coach.

And, way to go Mustangs!! If you remember I said in a post before the Rice game that I had seen Rice play and knew that SMU could beat them.

Now on to North Carolina - WIN, WIN!!

To MrMustang1965 and Houston Pony. Too bad they don't have the Icon I would like to use for my post but you are entitled to your own opinion. My opinion is to call Comet classless is like calling me classless. What to know what classless is? It's my telling you to kiss where the sun doesn't shine. How many people have taunted us. It's football.

Geez, folks. Please read my original post again! I was only passing on what the RADIO BROADCASTERS IN HOUSTON SAID!

I, in no way, consider Mike Cavan or the SMU Mustangs 'classless'! If anything, SMU has shown more class since returning from the DP than other schools would have shown under such circumstances. I remain a LOYAL MUSTANG FAN for life!

Hey MrMustang and Houston whatever. I Have Read your post and I agree with others on this. We did not run the score up, and If Comet did taunt(which he didn't) Tough stuff. Rice announcers are sore losers as are their sympathizers. Did they happen to mention how #82 ground Jonas Rutledge into the ground after his interception? I didn't think so! Tough Stuff is all I have to say to the sympathizers!!

"It ain't braggin if it's true." Muhammad Ali said that, back when he was Cassius Clay, back before he fought too many fights, and left his brain inside the ring.

Houston Pony, where did you leave your brain?
