Palmetto Bowl in CUSA's future?

this remains a long shot, but by the time SMU fields a bowl worthy football team, it's possible that CUSA will have an arrangement with the Palmetto Bowl in Charleston to play an ACC opponent. For anyone who has never been to Charleston, I think it would make a great desination city that time of year. Even though I will be leaving the area soon, I would look forward to seeing the Ponies play in a Palmetto Bowl game.

Hmmm, why hasn't Copeland proposed a Disney Bowl for Ford Stadium now that we've got good non wearouttable turf (probably cost us an arm, and a leg aka track team) to generate some money for old smooo.

Dallas is a big town, it can support 2 bowl games, especially if its a division II, or III semifinal, or final game. When Lobo Stadium in Longview was nearly brand new, the Lobos hosted a semi-nationally televised division II, or III playoff game on ABC.

Dallas needs to beat Fort Worth 2 bowl games to 1. :lol:

update in this morning's Charleston paper...controversy swirls around stadium plans as it is meeting neighborhood resistance. Funding hasn't yet been raised as the stadium is going to be home of the I-AA Citadel Bulldogs and they had been planning (and have funding for) only a 22,000 seat stadium. I'd still like to see this happen as it would be great to have a CUSA/ACC matchup in Charleston.

I agree with those who feel SMU should follow TCU's lead and try to develop a bowl SMU could host for CUSA, but who do you get as a sponsor? For years I had counted on Dr Pepper but with their sponsorship of the Big XII Championship, I'm not sure they'd be interested. Would be nice to have a CUSA-west team pitted against a Big XII opponent. I'm sure that's what TCU and the MWC will be gearing for in Ft Worth.

While it would be nice to have a game at Ford, at some point you also run the risk of having more bowls than bowl-worthy teams.

Let's go for the CUSA championship Games at Ford. Weather and location are good in December. And we don't have to worry about the City hosting a bowl game a week or two later (like New Orleans and Memphis). Alternate between Orlando and Dallas. Works for me.

I agree that Dallas and SMU hosting the CUSA Championship Game would be the smartest move. If the permanent site, expanding to 45K might make sense as well, by enclosing the horseshoe as designed.

can't say that I like the idea of SMU/Ford hosting the CUSA Championship game. That game needs to be played at the home site of one of the teams, to ensure a packed house. The MAC got a lot of mileage from their championships played at Marshall and Toledo. I'd hat to see a championship game of a league you are trying to promte played in front of 10-15,000 on national TV. That game MUST be played to a packed house.

The more I think about this, CUSA should aim to retain it's spot in the New Orleans Bowl against the SunBelt champ and then try to get the SunBowl or Houston Bowl as another game for it's western flank. Those two, along with the Liberty and Palmetto Bowls, and possibly the Tangerine...would provide ample opportunities. Four or five bowls following a championship game is plenty for a 12 member league
