"Stadium emptied too early" comment by Sherrington

Postby MiracleOnMockingbird » Sun Nov 21, 2010 12:48 pm

In Kevin Sherrington's column (quoted in another thread), he made it sound like June Jones was miffed that more people didn't stick around for the seniors being honored. Or maybe that was just Sherrington's opinion.

I remember last year's senior walk as being a bit disorganized, taking too long to get started, and being more a moment for the players and their families and friends.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the latter.

But not something that was fun for this fan last year, so I didn't stick around this time.

If they want each senior to get a big hand from the whole crowd, they'd be better off honoring them before the game like they used to.

Tough to keep a 3 year old entertained long enough to watch the whole game, much less stand around for another half hour and watch folks just milling around on the field. When they announced that we couldn't go on the field, we left. Thought I met have been able to get a few more minutes out of her had we been able to go see Peruna.

UTEP's seniors walk down the stadium stairs onto the field prior to the game. Their stats and home towns are announced. Pictures on the scoreboard. They had 26 seniors. It's a big deal for that team.

I like the way that Jones does it. It does not delay or distract from the main task (the game). Also I find it nice to be able to chat with the other players and their friends and family. And finally, you get the chance to personally thank the seniors in a relaxed atmosphere. Those that choose to leave (and that is fine if you want to) are really missing a nice event.

When more people go to the games, more people will stay for the seniors.

It's a no-win situation. Obviously, if you have it before the game, there are more people there. But it can be a distraction.

If you have it after the game, it's not the distraction but by human nature, people don't feel like sticking around for long after a game ends -- win or lose.

We actually stayed for a couple of the names. There was a lot of time between Varsity and the start of it. But sooner or later, you have things to do.

Personally, I like it after the game.

I had a nice conversation with JJ McDerrmott. Polite young man who really wants to play.

I like how Jones does it as well. It's a very relaxed atmosphere which matches his demeanor. My 7 year old daughter likes going down on the field afterwards to see all the action close up. Her prize was getting to pet Peruna on his way out after the ceremony.

The PA announcer made it sound like no one was going to be allowed on the field, which is why we left. I wasn't the only person who heard it that way either. I overhead a couple people grumble after his announcment saying something like "we got to go on the field last year, why not this year?" Very, very confusing. Maybe if they had been more clear about what the he!! was going on, we'd have stuck around.

I think they could have been more direct about their intentions, as well, rather than beating around the bush with a couple of mysterious announcements at the end of the 3rd quarter.

I had an inkling that they were going to let us go on the field when the announcer started talking about NCAA regulations preventing fans on the field until all players and personnel were off the field.

They did it exactly the same as last year. They announced how it would be done and then reminded the fans that they could not, by rule, go onto the field until the players and officials left the field. Sad that some did not understand, but I would advise that you plan on going down on the field next year. It is a good experience, and the players appreciate it.

We moved down closer in the stands and could see just fine.

The first announcement said that fans would not be allowed on the field and said they should gather in the corner of the stands. The second announcement, soon after, said people could go on the field once the players left. Not the most clear way to communicate it.

No, they didn't. They specifically stated that fans could not go on the field....not once, twice. Later, they then said that the NCAA rule was that fans could not go on the field until players and referees had left the field of player. Okay, do you mean just the Marshall players, or do you mean ALL players (including SMU)? It was unclear to everyone around in my section.
