Re: ECU favored by 1A great way to keep the ball out of their hands is to just get out of the way defensively and let them score on the first possession every time. I don't get the keep the ball out of their hands mentality. Just score your way and let your defense do their thing.
Re: ECU favored by 1
What don't you get? If you keep pounding the ball, the defense gets tired. Case in point, the team with the best record in the NFL, the Atlanta Falcons. They lead the league in 10+ play drives, the play smash mouth football, which wears the defense down/lulls them to sleep. I understand that is not our team philosophy, and am not advocating changing it. I just think JJ will be apt to use Line a lot to wear down their already depleted line. "smupony94: Harry, you have been promoted to purveyor of official status capabilities."
Re: ECU favored by 1
Not to be forgotten, controlling the ball with long multi-play drives helps your defense stay fresh. SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Re: ECU favored by 1
Understood that that's the common football wisdom. But the catch 22 is that, were you to continue doing what you did to get to 24 points, a slightly tired defense doesn't matter since you'd be so far ahead, points-wise. Just rolling over offensively and trying to burn clock actually gives the other team their best chance to catch up and win. We almost saw it on Saturday.
Re: ECU favored by 1Saturday it was the inability to move the ball in the second half combined with the inability to stop Marshall that let them back in the game. If our offense had been able to make long drives and score in the second half the game would not have been close.
Re: ECU favored by 1That's the point. We stopped doing in the second half what we were doing in the first half when we went to a ball control offense. I understand the concept of the other team doing halftime adjustments -- and maybe that's what happened to cause us to change our gameplan -- but why change something that has you rolling unless you just want the other team to feel good about themselves?
