Sports Media Thanksgiving Weekend

Postby DiamondM » Tue Nov 27, 2001 1:50 pm

POsted this yesterday on the other board, but format means that it was buried under mounds of head coach speculation.

Several musings about this past weekend and the media's coverage of SMU:

1. How great (and refreshingly different) was it to open up the sports section on Sunday to 3, count em, 3 positive articles about SMU. Football wins, women's basketball wins, long article on SMU soccer.

2. Saturday on the BoulevardI wandered over near the Schticket booth to get a plastic football for my dog and overheard them actually saying good things about SMU saying that it was better to be SMU in a halfway decent conference than a pseudo Big 12 school like Baylor. Radical turn for the ticket, positive mention of SMU, not to mention actual sports talk.

3. In the 'any publicity is good publicity' category, Gottfried said nice things on the ESPN telecast when quizzed by his co-analysts. Not much meat to it, but at least they're talking about SMU rather than ignoring it as usual.

4. In the 'any publicity is good publicity--I guess' was in the car going to boyfriend's parents' house from the airport in Tuscaloosa, AL and their local call in sports show hosted by some doofus named Paul was on. Mentioned that they were supposed to have Gottfried on for analysis but that he couldn't make it because he was being interviewed at SMU. Then had Rick Alonzo from the DMN to talk about the SMU coaching vacancy (but the idiot's questions quickly turned to the Cowboys' problems -- I felt like I was still in Dalls). After Rick hung up, Paul the idiot said 'Why anyone would want the SMU job I don't know.' I practically blew a gasket and just about called in to remind him that Bama's beloved coach had taken over a 1-10 TCU team with no real hope for the future, and it worked out okay for him.

Anyway, they're talking about us. And that is good.
