Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Pats1) Mentioned this in another thread, but heard this rumor through multiple folks. As the wind blows, SMU low-balled Orsini on any extension talk. One such source said we offered less than what he's currently being paid, but not sure I believe that. As of now, Orsini may be taking the a-train according to these gossip hounds.
So, who's going to hire Doh's replacement if he needs to go this Spring, and Orsini is a lame-duck? 2) Pats is really old, lol. W/the NCAAs 'lose a year after 21 rule', Pats needs to be cleared this year, or we're going to lose this year of eligibility forever. In short, he'd only have two to play next year, not 3. Ouch. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ PatsWhy would we ante-up when Orsini was "supposedly" a finalist or at least semi-finalist for the ND AD positition, and then low ball him three years later? Did he make a pass at his Turner that we don't know about?
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ PatsI heard June was waiting to sign his contract because he was waiting to make sure Orsini was taken care of. I know June has since signed, so I thought that meant they had reached an agreement with the big O. Hope it gets settled soon.
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Pats
supposedly is the operative word. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Pats
I've been told time and again that June isn't really the fan of Orsini many think. I really don't know how all that plays out, or what's true. As a hoops fan that recognizes the need for new blood, i'd be ecstatic if Orsini hit the road. I'd be shocked if he got the next hoops hire right, shocked. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ PatsPerhaps Orsini's contract was tied to certain goals (including getting into an autobid conference). Who knows? Thus, the current contract may look inflated than what it really is. Orsini certainly hit a home run with JJ, but swung and missed with Doh (so far). My UNC friends, say something to the effect that Doh flat out can't coach. Coaching basketball is not rocket science. Its about maximizing your strengths and maximizing the other team's weaknesses. Sometimes the best coaching is minimal coaching. Sometimes its micro coaching. A great coach can handle both scenarios.

Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Pats
I really don't think Orsini hit a home run w/JJ. He vastly overpaid, and 'supposedly' maxed out our best boosters, and left us w/this mess in hoops. Only two revenues, and you cant steal from Peter to pay Paul. I'm all about the success of football, and understand the way to generate revenue, upgrade conference affiliation etc. That said, showing JJ that type of cash in a non-BCS environment, where we draw 16k or whatever, is questionable. That's bull in a china shop business, no finesse. I'm ok w/it, if we have 'eff you' money to toss around, but do we really? Seriously, I championed the 'rehab the head coaching position' stance, but that's done, and we even have some locals to show for it. You need to have the money to buy this guy out, his staff, and then pay a mill plus for new coach, before staff. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ PatsDoh for AD.
![]() Let the search firm find the bball coach. Problem solved.

Why not just let the Knight Commission run things? ![]()
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Pats
Provided we invest properly in a good hire...right? I guess I'm asking if you have confidence in our ability as a University to select an excellent, qualified candidate since we don't have the...uhhh...the best track record with ahletic related hires here in the past 25 years.
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ PatsI think Doh was probably the cheapest "name" coach available at the time. Unfortunately, there are only two types of coaches who can succeed at SMU. Overpaid, "huge" name coaches, like Billy Clyde or Tubby, or Bobby Knight, or Majerus (who is just plain huge), or you go with the up and comer. The guy who will be the next generation great coach. That unfortunately requires a roll of the dice because some work out and some don't and we've rolled snake eyes several times with that, but again, we're in a different admission era than we were in those days. We can try and recruit some guys who we couldn't have talked to before. That means that an up and comer would now be on a relatively even playing field.

Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Patsand of those listed, the one available who we actually could have a shot at would be BCG.
So the options are BCG or up and comer?
