Cool Offense June!!!Moderators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Cool Offense June!!!There is a difference between being happy and being content. I'm happy that we've made it to 2 straight bowl games, but that doesn't mean I'm content. I want better for this program, but I (unlike yourself shadowman) am patient enough to give the man time to get his full system in place and with a full plate of recruits.
What I don't get here is that you're a former player yet you seem to have no concept of the time it takes to put together a winning program and no appreciation for the amount of improvement that June Jones has led us to. You should understand that it takes at least 4-5 years for a coach to get his system fully implemented and get his type of players integrated into that system. It's been 3 years. In that 3 years June Jones has taken this program to levels that it hasn't seen in a quarter of a century. You can say Bennett, Cavan and Rossley were close, but close didn't get us to a bowl game. You can ignore Jones' bowl win and say that we were 7-5 last year, but you're choosing to ignore facts to create your own reality. We were 8-5. The mere fact that our record added up to 13 last year instead of 12 should tell you a lot. The Mustangs earned that 13th game last year and 14th this year. Another thing that's clear to me in all of this is that you are what you despise. You call out people for being June Jones Hawaii Sunshiners, but look in the mirror you're a Todd Graham Sunshiner. You've offered no other alternative solution than Todd Graham. You sing his praises, and admit to knowing him personally, which gives you a connection and a bias. All of that and you still admit that June Jones is one of very few that could have been able to force the changes necessary to make this program competitive. Would Todd Graham or another up and comer have been able to do this? I don't know and I don't care because he's not here. He probably never will be. And why do you harp so much on Jones' salary? It's not money out of your pocket; you should just be grateful that there are people associated with this program that are willing to give the amount of money necessary to get a "has-been coach" that's led us to back-to-back bowl games. You cringe at how much we've paid him and cite the "business owner in you" as a reason, but guess what he is the only coach that has been able to bring bowl revenue to this team, and he's done it 2 of the first 3 years he's been on campus, not to mention greater attendance (although still plenty of room for improvement) and greater exposure nationally. Not a bad short term return on your investment. My advice to you (and take it for what it's worth) is to be happy, not content. Be happy that this program has improved and all signs point to further improvement. Don't be content with the areas of deficiency in your mind, lest you settle for mediocrity. If you would've just stuck with the "Why does Jones make Padron run to the sidelines" and "predictable playcalling premises this thread probably wouldn't be 8 pages and counting (and this reply wouldn't be nearing 1000 words). I'm very happy with June Jones and the job he's done so far but I found myself wondering why he didn't kick a field goal and then try for the onside kick with some time left. But just because I disagree with how he handled that doesn't mean I'm going to fly off the handle and say he's a washed up has been. Be patient; Jones won't always make the perfect call but you can't deny where he's brought this program and that no other coach since the death penalty has been able to do the same. Give him time to get all his players in place and truly integrate his full system before you go running for Todd Graham. Here's to those that wish us well and all the rest can go to hell!!!
Re: Cool Offense June!!!
You IDIOTS June had never had a running back run for a 1000 yards, and now he has had 2 in 2 years ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That sounds like a little EVOLVING ![]() After all it is the RUN N shoot ![]() ![]() May the forth be with us.
Re: Cool Offense June!!!I will say we are getting pretty predictable, but it ultimately comes down to execution and UCF just had better athletes than we did today; those of us at the game all commented that if you had told us we would hold UCF to 17 points going in,we liked our chances of coming away with the W
tough game...but it was a beautiful day in Orlando and a fun road trip
Re: Cool Offense June!!!
If remotely possible, try watching with a girl.
Re: Cool Offense June!!!
that is a pretty strong point... How can you really argue that he's not "keeping up with the times" when he's obviously changed how he does things?
Re: Cool Offense June!!!Memo to Mountain Mustang:
Thank you for your insightful comments. Best post of the day.
Re: Cool Offense June!!!
Agreed on Mountain Mustang ( he must have been sitting on top of the mountain yesterday morning thoughtfully contimplating the SMU universe)...as the athletes come in the team will get better. After all, the 3 and 4 Star athletes will make ANY coach appear to be a genious..... Last edited by ponyscott on Sun Dec 05, 2010 12:13 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: Cool Offense June!!!
understatement.
Re: Cool Offense June!!!
Re: Cool Offense June!!!I would like to see a little more creativity and different looks. Would be great to have a hybrid offense similar to Houston's, Tulsa, or Oregon. However, didn't SMU run the football more than a typical R N" Shoot offense. I am excited to see LIne play 2 more years.
It does make you wonder why nobody is using this offense. How does Hawaii's differ now from when June was there? Anyone? I just don't know of another coach that could have done this in a short period to bring a program back to being competitive. SMU was going nowhere fast.
Re: Cool Offense June!!!
1) You are reinforcing my point. Yes, obviously, going to two bowl games and playing for a conference championship is much, much better than what PB did. Even an idiot could see that. So you are one step below an idiot... a moron. 2) You say that June hasn't evolved the offense? First two seasons ever with a 1,000 yard rusher in his offense. Do you think he didn't change things to make that happen? Logic would persuade me to think otherwise. Those of us who sat through 25 years of [deleted] can truly say that you, sir, are a moron.
Re: Cool Offense June!!!Shadowman posts that he's looking at things from a 'business owner's perspective." If my business had gone bankrupt, and spent 20+ years trying to just break even (with no success), and a group of folks offered to pay the salary of a turnaround specialist who actually made a profit after two years, I'd be thrilled.
I haven't sipped any June Jones kool-aid, and there's always room for improvement, but SMU football is more fun now than it has been in a long time! Great post, Mountain Mustang.
Re: Cool Offense June!!!This whole thread was a fascinating read, running the gamut of intelligence and taste and respect (or lack thereof) for the divergent opinion. Awaiting shadowman's response, but I suspect the spectacular summation and rebuttal by MM was the end of it.
Don't worry. Be Happy. Or not.
Re: Cool Offense June!!!From watching the SMU-TCU game this year, you can see that SMU was lacking size and athleticism in secondary and depth overall. JJ has us in three years to the point where you can actually compare us to a team in the Rose Bowl. I think JJ will add more to the offense when he has the players.
Re: Cool Offense June!!![quote="shadowmanOnly because he refuses to change. Look at Hawaii, they basically kept the run and shoot, but updated it. June is still running the same offense he ran in the 80's. Sounds either lazy or stubborn to me.
Remember folks, there is a reason no teams in the top 25 still run the run and shoot or triple option, because there are better offenses. take off your June Love Glasses and soak up that last sentence..[/quote] The offense he's running is vastly different than what he ran at Hawaii. For that matter, have you noticed the tight end?
