Rumor: Vandy lands Malzan

Postby leopold » Sat Dec 11, 2010 4:31 pm

Rumour coming out of Nashville is that Vandy has landed Auburn OC Gus Malzan as thier next HC, and that they are going to pay him up to 2.8 Million. Malzan was probably their #1 choice to take the job from the beginning.

Malzan is asking that this announcement not be made public until after the Heisman so that his currentl player Newton can enjoy the spotlight, so look for this to hit the news sometime during 'Pony Excess.'

Admittedly this is a rumor, coming from my father, an ex-Vandy football player with strong ties to the team.

Looks like too much money to turn down, even if the money is coming from a coaching graveyard.

Kind of expected him to play the field a little longer if true. Vandy would have waited. But the SEC lure is strong and I do not think he was considered for Florida. Vandy is my second favorite school. My brother graduated there and they were one of my limited D1 offers. I hope he can succeed there but it will tough. Watch for a gimmick offense similar to the run and shoot because he will not have quite the caliber athletes of his competition.

Bud Foster really put the job down.

"I've got a great job here. That's an SEC job, but I might have a better job here as the defensive coordinator at Virginia Tech. I say that because you guys know my personality. I don't know how I would do when the best you can do is maybe win five or six games a year playing your best football.”

Ps: Do not be surprised to see Keihl Frazier decommit from Auburn to go to Vandy.

Apparantly he was waiting to see how the domino effect from the Florida and Miami coaching jobs played out. If Mullen or Petrino were to go, then he would have been the top candidate at Arkansas and Mississippi State. But he might believe that those coaching jobs may not be open.

Wouldn't that be a mortal lock as soon as Malzahn is announced? No reason to stay committed to Auburn if Malzahn won't be there.

Petrino signed a 7 year contract yesterday. That might have been his decision factor.

Following up on Petrino's new contract, it includes an $18,000,000 buy out for the first few years. It then begins to drop some but it would be pretty expensive to someone for him to leave any time soon.

I can't believe that coaches can get that kind of buyout in their contracts. Absolutely ridiculous amount of money. This puts all the risk on the school, and very little on the coach. If the coach goes 2-10, he can rest easy because either his buy out is way too much for him to get canned, or he'll get his ridiculous buyout and be set. Just another piece of evidence showing what's wrong with "amateur" athletics.
