Can this be right?Friday's DMN story (see the PonyFans.com homepage) says that our defense dropped 28 would-be interceptions last year. 28?!?!?!? I knew there were some .... one in the UTEP game and one late against TCU come to mind .... but 28? That, as much as anything, has got to change. In a hurry.
Stallion Imitation: What I've been saying all along and what you idiots fail to realize is that had we been on a level playing field with our natural and traditional rivals we would not have dropped those 28 interceptions. You try making a pick on a tilted field.
PonySnot Imitation: We suck. We seriously do. Seriously, although lack of a pass rush has been an issue, it was good that we were at least put into a position to miss 28 int's. As Coach Bennett has said, it was the drop on the winning drive at the TCU game that hurt the most. That would have sealed a pretty special win.
Re:
Those are prety good imitations, sushiner. What was our record last year again? You can rail on people who observe the truth about this program, but that will not change the truth.
Re:
Hey jt, I like sushi myself so I guess I'm a sushi-ner too. Seriously, why are your "truths" or Stallion's "truths" so superior to anyone else's "truths"? What exactly did Ponyboy write that was not true or that railed against the truth???? Lighten up and have some sushi.
Well said, PK.
I am continuously amused by the truth squad. What is the point of restating the obvious over and over again? It is as if by being negative, they have greater insight. At the end of the day, decisions and mistakes have occurred which precede DP and continue up until this day. The issue is support for our school, our team and our student athletes. Saying that administration and the coaches don't get "it", has always been a weak and lazy arguement to me. Threatening to withhold support, money, attendance, etc. isn't an option for alumni of a school to make. SMU will have my support regardless, despite disappointment and lack of success. The Mustangs are not a professional team. That doesn't mean I won't expect and demand improvement but questioning motives of those in charge makes no sense. Let's get on with THIS season and expect better results. Isn't that the essence of college FB? Go U, S-M-U! Pony Up
Re:
That sounds like a promising lunch option. My truths are based in fact. 0-12 last year is real. Talking about how good it was to be in the position of dropping 28 interceptions is not "truth"--it's just sunshine. Saying that we missed out on a "special win" by one play is exactly the same. That guy makes fun of people who express genuine concern over the program's shortcomings in the same post he proclaims these accomplishments. It's just ridiculous. And for the record, I have never threatened to withhold attendance or support as that other sunshiner suggested. That is wrong and I wouldn't do it. In fact, I'll probably be the ony one left there when our attendance woes force us down in division.
Re: Can this be right?
I swore Bennett said 21 durin the media thing but oo well. I dont remember the UTEP one but I sure as heck remember that fumble KK had when he was almost in the endzone..1 or 2 yard line. I cant get that one out of my head ![]()
Did we really lose 12 games last year and didn't win any? Could somebody please send a memo!! The truth is we lost some games badly (OSU, TT, BSU, LA Tech, Rice). We were clearly out manned in those games and unable to compete with those teams talent-wise. We also snatched defeat from the jaws of victory several times (Baylor, UTEP, Nevada and Tulsa come to mind). Hopefully, this crop of players will mature into a team which will give some of our opponants some fits (maybe even by the end of this season). We just need to be realistic that this year will be one tough year. The other hope is that after the first three games, they don't just mail it in. If that happens, we will be in for a very long four years. This will be the gut check year.
I wonder if Bennett counted some of those OSU touchdown catches as drops by Rutledge. He sure had a hand on many of them prior to Woods catching them in the endzone.
Re:
Dont forget Fresno State! We were up 5-0 ![]() ![]()
Re:
I don't remember Jonas getting a hand on those passes. I do remember him getting legitimately beaten a few times, and I also remember Woods pushing off like Michael Irvin on many others. Had Rutledge gotten the help over the top from the safeties that he needed, Woods wouldn't have scored that many times. I'm not suggesting that we would have shut him down by any means, but it was as much the fault of the safeties and Woods getting away with offensive P.I. as it was Rutledge getting beat.
Buddha, I think you're right about the safeties. I remember the Sportscenter anchor, during highlights, joking after his 5th or 6th touchdown: "Hmmm...if you're SMU, at what point do you abandon the single coverage option?" Smug punk.
