Re: June Jones vs. Gerald Turner -- a struggle for powerWhat is the point of letting them in if they are going to fail after a year on campus. The better path to success is to do what TCU did and that is get marginal students that can do enough to pass. I want to have upper-classmen on the team and not a bunch of freshmen and sophmores.
Re: June Jones vs. Gerald Turner -- a struggle for power
Turner may not be an idiot in many areas, but he most certainly is in the realm of athletics. Other than the success engineered by June Jones in the past two years, football and basketball have been tremendously disappointing throughout Turner's tenure. Do not claim that he is concerned with producing a "great athletic program" when he tolerated the idiot Copeland for more than a decade. Far East Conference
Re: June Jones vs. Gerald Turner -- a struggle for powerSomething is terribly amiss when one of the players that didn't qualify for us this past year ends up at UCLA. Can't remember what was the recruits name but hmmmmmm? Something's not right in Denmark for sure.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
Re: June Jones vs. Gerald Turner -- a struggle for power
As I recall he was not admitted to UCLA but was basically offered the same JUCO route as Turner offered. I'm not certain if the rumor he failed to make the grades required for admission to UCLA are accurate or just conjecture, but I know I read somewhere that was the result. There is no use wasting a scholarship if the student/recruit is going to fail to make minimum passing grades either for himself or the University. BTW I'm still living on socal time and it is 1:34 here in Dallas. I really should rack it but not even close to sleepy. ![]() SMU - IT'S YOUR TURN

Re: June Jones vs. Gerald Turner -- a struggle for powerI just don't see how this can be all about admissions. Yes, there are issues, but enough of an issue to turn into a media battle? This has to be about somethign else.
Does it relate to how we are keeping players eligable? Maybe Turner isn't allowing athletes to be guided to the "right" professors who will keep them eligable. Maybe Turner is blocking the IPF somehow. Is the money raised but Turner won't allow it to be built? It must be something major. Getting the last few lowest-academic players who can't stay eligable anyway isn't major. "I think Couchem is right."

Re: June Jones vs. Gerald Turner -- a struggle for powerAll I can say is to remind you about what I posted on this forum sometime back. I was playing a round of golf a number of years ago with a man who played football at Ole Miss. He was an All American, he and his family were icons at Ole Miss and he had played in the NFL. I mentioned that SMU had just hired Gerald Turner away from Ole Miss to become our president. He said, "You can have him. He ruined football at Ole Miss." It would be interesting to know Archie Manning's views on this subject.
Re: June Jones vs. Gerald Turner -- a struggle for powerAs I said in the Bird of Prey response. Football coaches and academics are always going to fight about admissions. We are not a State University where everybody with a high school sheepskin is eligible. We are trying to be a first rate university. As for the Faculty Review process for non-admittees, these kids get to come and say why they want to come to SMU instead of the thin envelope. The faculty is full of bleeding hearts who see racial and ethnic discrimination throughout our education system and would love to make these kids posterchildren for their cause. But even they can't bring themselves to admit some of these kids. And some of the ones they have, managed to not go to class, make grades or generally try to succeed academically.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: June Jones vs. Gerald Turner -- a struggle for powerI see a case for both sides...I just think it their needs to be a clear line for what is going to pass or not...If a recruit is above that line, no interview, mo meetings, he is in...
If he is below, that is JJ's problem...
Re: June Jones vs. Gerald Turner -- a struggle for powerPerhaps the IPF proposal is cutting in on the Bush Library parking lot.
