Some of what he says sounds like posturing to where he can say "we've left it better than what it started out as..it's not about the money, never will be, but [name the job] is a special place with special people and I feel called to be there."

Don't rest easy on June staying just yet. If he does stay, great...that's my preference. If he doesnt, then let's get someone else in here. I can think of a few that would be capable and I'd like to see should circumstances warrant.

Why did Bob Stoops talk to Florida when it came open before Urban Meyer got the job?

Why did Kirk Ferentz talk to the Balitmore Ravens before that job went to Jack Harbaugh?

Why do you talk to potential other employers about other opportunities as opposed to the job you're currently holding?

The bottom line is you never stop looking for a way to better yourself.

I don't buy it - if he's "committed to SMU" as he says, why bother.

say you're happy with your job, family, life right now and a headhunter calls from one of your competitors and says "hey, we've really taken notice to what you're doing and wanted to just let you know what else is available, we can pay you 2x what you're making now". so you listen. then you think about having to move somewhere new, move your family, find a new house, take the kids out of school, make all new contacts in your business/sales, find a new church, meet new friends, and basically start from scratch. you start to think that even if the opportunity might be better financially, and maybe even for your career long-term, the other intangibles outweigh the tangibles.

Sure, maryland may be in an AQ conf, and may pay more, but he'd have to move his whole staff there, or find new, have to make all new recruiting in-roads in basketball country, so he'd basically have to recruit florida & maybe georgia which are pretty well covered by all the SEC schools and everyone else w/n 300 miles.

plus it gets cold in maryland and june doesn't wear socks. (i think this is the real reason)
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

Finding a new church was always the deal breaker for me.

I think you are probably joking at the exampl I was making but some people are very attached to their place of warship and the congregation/leadership.

Per ESPN - didn't realize it was just a search firm who contacted him rather than talking to the school

Strangely, it is good for the school. Keeps your school in the news. Recruits see it and hear it. Takes some getting used to as fans. However, as we have learned with GP, recruits take notice when your coach's name is mentioned with every high profile openning and yet he stays put. Powerful stuff believe it or not. You should hope JJ is mentioned prominently over the next decade. If not, check your record. It wont be very good.

Why don't you enlighten us on what projects are in the offing? I don't get SMU and secrecy around stuff like this that doesn't need to be kept secret. We've supposedly had plans/renderings for years for Moody renovations, but I've yet to seem them become public. How about the school floats them to at least the MC to generate some excitement and perhaps some funding?

Same thing happened with the new scoreboard. That is a perfect thing to announce during the off season to keep excitement in the fan base. SMU needs to give our Athletic Department some Marketing 101 courses for free.

I recently did. I learned a lot. There are things in the offing, such as the new field turf for Ford. My understanding is that there are going to be some serious discussions/drives (not the Morgan campaign) started in the next couple of months -- especially after the NFC team leaves the campus -- to get projects going. When will they start? I have no idea. But the fund raising aspect drives it.

Instead of talking in circles about this and that, go ask somebody and then "What can I do to help?"

I mentioned it in the other thread that I've come up with an idea that may help in a small way.

Instead of burning energy on this board, just ask yourselves what you are prepared to do? Be proactive, FOR ONCE!

Well said as usual. I agree with u close to 99% of the time. The 1% is your choice of avatars but my New Year resolution is to leave politics out of my discussion with others who share one of my greatest passions: SMU and SMU football.

JJ's being pursued by another school is one of the prices of progress so the Chicken Littles better get used to it if we continue to have success on the field. Anyone who has ever had success in his or her career knows that successful people do listen when EF Hutton calls. To think otherwise is naive. This is the kind of quality problem I will take all day long and twice on Sundays.
