Re: Phil BennettColonelMustard,
I don't know for sure what NCAA minimums are, but here is what our policy is. You make the decision. This policy statement was promulgated in November of 2000. Admission procedures Procedures used to admit prospective student athletes should reflect actual admission practices over the past decade and SMU's success in graduating those admitted. The record has shown that, under existing procedures, the Faculty Athletic Admissions Subcommittee typically has admitted prospective student athletes with SAT scores of 950 or above combined with G.P.A.s of 2.5 or higher because over time, their graduation rates have been similar to those of students with SAT scores of 1010 and G.P.A.s of 2.5 or above. Thus, the SAT score that determines which candidates will be reviewed by faculty can be adjusted downward. In addition, "the process can be simplified by shifting faculty involvement in decision-making from the prospects with the greatest potential for academic success to where it is needed most -- those prospects presenting more marginal academic credentials," says Associate Provost Tunks. Accordingly, the review process will be streamlined. Senior-level admissions personnel will review categories of prospective student athletes that historically have resulted in routine admission decisions, using the same criteria and process as they do for all prospective students. A faculty committee will review the files of highest-risk prospective student athletes. In addition, all athletics admission decisions will be monitored twice each semester by the Faculty Athletic Admissions Subcommittee based upon summary data provided by the Office of Admissions. All athletic admissions and retention data are to be monitored yearly by the University Admissions Council, composed of faculty in addition to staff in student enrollment areas. "Greater involvement of admissions personnel is consistent with the procedures of eight of the nine peer institutions interviewed," Turner said. "However, at SMU, we intend to continue faculty involvement in decision-making, focusing it on the cases in which their expertise and attention are most needed, in addition to continuing their important role as monitors." SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Phil BennettI question Whatasteve's committment to the program. He's always got one hand on a burger.
Take him off the list, and replace him with Ed Pachecano. Or Skip Jones. Or Greg Ford.
Re: Phil BennettDirty Bird, what are you doing to me? You're replacing me with Amit? (Sorry, I refuse to call anyone by a Ticket-given nickname.) Greg Ford? (Who's that?) What did I ever do to you?
I've been eating better, drinking less (sobered up for a few minutes last Wednesday afternoon ... but I got over that) and approaching my fighting weight, so to speak. Haven't had a good 1st and 10 burger in ages. The gut is retreating rapidly. Much like your hairline. [This message has been edited by whatasteve (edited 12-04-2001).]
Re: Phil BennettNice one on the hairline. I'll tally up a busted, and a butt crusted for you up on the big board.
Sorry to ever lump you in the same category with those folks. Have the Orioles called back yet?
Re: Phil BennettWhy is Ed Pachecano on that list? What did he ever do that is so bad?
Go Red, Go Blue, Go Mustangs, S M U
Re: Phil BennettI don't understand the derision that Bennett's getting here before he even steps foot on campus.
Phil was a favorite of fans to replace Fran. The players wanted GP, but none of them had ever played for Bennett and he was an unknown quantity to Hyman. Every Frog who's seen him coach has been impressed and he has recruiting contacts in Texas HS out the wazoo. Most Frogs are worried 'cause we think Phil can turn SMU around in a relatively short time. He's a good man and a good hire. I think you folks should lay off and give him a chance. \"Fight 'em 'til Hell freezes over then fight 'em on the ice!\"- TCU Legend Dutch Meyer
Re: Phil BennettI totally agree with a horned frog on this one. Many of you sound like fools bad mouthing some "no-name" that YOU may not have heard of, but has earned the respect of MANY in the real world of football.
Mac, keep your money... who here really cares? And by the way, have you not heard that Texas Tech has not officially played in front of a sold out crowd yet in Lubbock? Sure, Knight's hiring created a buzz. But he's going to sell out the arena ONLY if the Red Raiders can continue at their current pace of 6-1. How many of you have any idea whether or not our defensive coaches even wanted to stay without Cavan? We had a good defense, but I expect it to now become even better. And I am fairly certain our offense can pick it up as well with someone Bennett may be connected with and can bring on in his staff. Let it play out for a while before you start criticizing people on their decisions. There are undoubtedly a lot more factors involved than many of you have any clue about. Open your minds. Great football is played outside the state lines of Texas and Oklahoma. And now we can bring great football back into University Park.

Hire a good football coach and I will start giving more money.

Break out the check book my friend. The Ponies have landed themselves a helluva coach. If you aren't ripping up the WAC in three years I'll be quite surprised. I really wish KState could have held on to Coach Bennett, but he's too good and he's pure Texan so the head job SMU was too much to pass up. There seem to be concerns here that if Bennett has success at SMU he'll be looking for the A&M job. I'm not so sure. If he manages to bring the program from where it is now to a level of consistent excellence, how ecstatic will Mustang fans be? My guess is he'll get the same reaction that Bill Snyder gets in Manhattan and Bob Stoops gets in Norman. They're untouchable; they'd be crazy to go nearly anywhere else (Stoops is young enough he might look to ND or the pros, but he'd be crazy to go back to Iowa). There's no sense leaving a place where you're already a hero and going somewhere that places enormous demands and expectations upon you. Unless the difference in paycheck is substantial, and I've gotta believe SMU alumni will take care of a winning coach who runs a clean program. So congratulations to y'all. I lived in Fort Worth for a year which has always made me a bit of a Frog fan (since they're purple I already had the correct wardrobe), but now the Ponies are definitely my favorite team in the WAC.
Re: Phil BennettTwo Thoughts:
1) This is a good hire. That's all I'm going to say about that. Become informed about football before badmouthing a professional. 2) Dirty Bird. I think I'm flattered but I take offense to being lumped in with at least one of those individuals. Was that a backhanded compliment? Do I know you? Are you tall? _____________________________________

Re: Phil BennettLet me just start by apologizing. I am sorry for bashing Bennett before he has even taken the reigns. I know that is no way to let a good guy start his career at SMU. I am a little disappointed about Waters not getting the job only because I think the guy really wanted it and he would have put his heart and soul into the job. Not to say that Bennett won't do any of that.
That being said I think that Bennett will do an excellent job. I have calmed down a bit and thought about Big Jim's decision and I think it will probably be a good one. I know Bennett is a great guy and I am sure he will turn the SMU Mustangs into a helluva team. I am excited about all the possibilities. Someone on the boards talked about Bennett's wife being struck by lightening a couple years ago and once I saw a picture of him I remember reading an article about him in Sports Illustrated. It is a great article and if anyone can dig it up they should post it on the boards. It really gets into what kind of person he is and what he went through. Anyway, hail to the chief. I am sorry if I offended anyone with my posts. Please know that I could never turn my back on SMU athletics, no matter how bad they treat me. Congratulations Coach Bennett.
Re: Phil BennettEddie P,
I was just clownin' around. You would be great on any committee concerning SMU. You and Whatasteve have a committment with SMU that is admirable. It was a compliment, and not a backhanded one. Although Whatasteve will likely sever all ties later this week, when the Orioles sign him to DH for them. He'll be a fat version of John Kruk. I predict 35 HR, 100 RBI and 150 strikeouts.
Re: Phil Bennett...numerous walks (though he'll be winded) and a couple of stolen bases (namely home plates), which he'll use to carry his greasy 1st & 10 burgers back to the dugout.

Re: Phil BennettDirty Bird-
No problem. I was just kidding around too. Who is the mysterious Whatasteve that I keep hearing about? And you, Dbird...I guess you know me but at least give me a hint as to how I would know you. You can be obscure...I'm slightly above average in intelligence. _____________________________________

Re: Phil BennettDirty Bird and Peruna Punch, you're officially off the christmas card list. This incessant dogpiling is uncalled for.
(And by the way, DB, the O's want me coming in from the bullpen, not swinging a stick.) Peruna Punch's malicious attack was particularly uncalled for. I exchange barbs with the Bird, and PP weighs in with a shot at my lack of fitness? Or perhaps the fact that I smoke 524 cigs a day? Not a wise move on your part. You jumped into a battle where I was picking on the Bird for his hairline .... I'd think that is one fight you do NOT want to enter! You both owe me lunch for these unsolicited attacks.
Re: Phil BennettAll right, that's it Whatasteve. You're going down! You, me, 1st & 10 Thursday.
Celebrity grease grudge match. And don't talk trash about my comb-over. That's nothing (literally) to laugh at. "It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller
